File this under "Do as I say and not as I do..."
When I first started this layout it wasn't really meant to be permanent, I just put a couple of pieces of old 4' x 8' hardboard on a few sawhorses & I figured if I ever had to move the layout I'd just take off the "top" & then reposition it after I moved the sawhorses. I put sliders under the feet to help it slide if I needed to do maintenance or work on scenery. It kind of sort of slid forward or backwards a few feet but really, it was a huge pain in the rear to move.
I finally had enough of that hassle so I built 2 proper "frames" with legs for the pieces of hardboard & slid them underneath the original hardboard sheets. I won't bore you with all of the details but let's just say I can move the whole 16' layout with one hand now. The frame & wheels are the best improvement I've made on the layout to date, but honestly, it should have been the first thing I did. Bad, bad layout builder. : )

I built two of these...

... and slid them under the two halves of the layout...

...then bolted the two halves back together. It works!
