I thought it might be interesting to compare the best average lap speeds of the top cars in each class. I did not record the best lap times, as I was busy enough just getting the laps down, but I took the best lane totals and did the math to get an average over those laps.
In Class A, the best average lap time was 8.3 seconds done by Bob's #48. This is an excellent speed to average over three minutes and 21.65 laps. Second was Stewart's #148 at 8.33, then Doug's #17 at 8.37, and my #87 and Dale's #3T tied at 8.57. All exceptional speeds for cars powered by small RPM motors.
In Class B, the best average lap time was 7.39 done by Chris's #20. Second was Steve's #85 at 7.69. Followed by Luf's #24L at 7.7 and Dan's #16 at 7.89. Remember that these averages are only for the best heats, and the cars that maintained high numbers consistently on all three lanes finished ahead of the ones that rocketed on one lane and not on the others.
In any regard, the cars performed well for the most part. As with qualifying, there were a few that were gear ratio challenged, a few with traction challenges, and a couple lightweights that were prone to rolling off if pushed, but this is true of any proxy series. It will be interesting to see how the Burnaby Grind Hillclimb shakes up the order. From previous experience, often the slower cars on the Targa score better on the hill, and some of the fast ones have trouble. That event is planned for Friday afternoon.
Cheers,
Keith
