Your dream track - What would it be

Postby Dangermouse » Fri Jan 02, 2015 4:21 am

I like making tracks currently with the help of my brother and dad we have made 5 tracks.

I was recently looking at the Slot Mod site (again) and dreaming of my next track (it took 2 years to dream of my current one and it isn't finished)

So if you had the time space and resources what would be your dream track?
I quite like the Martin Raceway track from Slot Mods - but it is a bit expensive

I like the way they have incorporated lots of historic turns and places.

I have always thought the Flying Cow Raceway looked like a fun track to race on.

So post a pic, photo of plan of your dream layout.

Might inspire someone to build a new track :)

Happy New Year

I'm going to hire that "Mayhem" guy from the Allstate commercials to steal it when you are not home !!!
I think he can do it without anyone noticing !

I came up with the concept for this track about two years ago, but I have nowhere near enough room anywhere in my house to implement it. Hopefully some day we'll move to a house where I can make it a reality. Even after all that time, it's still the layout I dream of.

I have plans somewhere that I drew out on graph paper, but they've been swallowed up by my home's black hole. Here's a quick drawing from MS Paint of what I hope to build some day:
Image
I can't recall the dimensions, but you're probably looking at about at least a 24' x 8' footprint, with a bit longer area at the base of the downhill run on the left side that I did not account for in the drawing. It should extend out another couple of feet to allow for a further drop in elevation. The optional oval lanes would be enacted by use of mechanical flipper switches. Basically, attach the flippers to a rod that sticks out of the benchwork at the front of the track. Yanking the rod would move the flippers and enable the use of the lanes.

The best thing about doing Riverside or Sonora is that the scenery is basically desert with a few scrubs. Is Pomona that way, too?

I saw a track many years ago in London, Ontario, that was designed in such a way as to have a long straight through tall woods down the middle of the track. The drivers stations were at the ends of the track, looking right down the long straight, and still in full view of the very interesting road course with elevations on either side of that long straight. It was only 3 lanes, and they were pretty tight, except that straight. They had been trying to imitate the Mulsane Straight at LeMans, and this was long before the little jog was added to slow cars after the Mercedes Silver Arrow flight. I wonder what has happened to that track? It was on the second floor of a downtown dime store where a hobby area had been created. There was also an 8 lane road course that was operated as a commercial track. The LeMans track was for the club. It must have been 20 feet long at least.

Yes Riverside International Raceway was on my list when trying to choose a design for my track. I just didn't have enough room to do it right. Went to it a few times in the 60's when I lived in Riverside. Now as Shotgun Dave says it is a mall and houses. For a slot car it would be a good track to run on, very challenging. In real life it was a very unforgiving track; especially turn nine ( the big sweeper just before the pits) and the turn before the esses. The person that hired me in the 80's had a very bad accident at turn nine driving a SCCA Solo I car.

The landscaping around Riverside would be very easy because of being desert.

What I'm planning on building when I get the room (either here or when we move) is a Sebring-esque airfield track set in the early to mid fifties. Mostly flat (not many mountains on an airfield) with the trackside structures able to be an eclectic mixture (i.e. model RR, card stock and military). Beyond that no detailed track plan yet but I'm saving buildings, people, hay bales, die casts, etc for future construction.

I'm afraid I could not have just one. Or perhaps it would be one with several diversions.

A nice flowing raceway of 3 lanes, perhaps 4 or 5, with a lead off the circuit that goes the a bit of 2 or 3 lane windy country road. And at another junction, another diversion into a single lane hill climb. Any of these sections could be run individually. The country run/rally track could be run in conjunction with either of the other tracks to extend them.

The track would include some classic corners. A Dipper is a must on the country road section. I like a bit of rise and fall on a race track. Flat is boring.

I disagree with Roger though. The SlotMods track is most definitely a race track. What it is not is a slot race track. I think there is a difference in both thinking and driving. The SlotMods tracks are for race simulation, not hell-for-leather screaming 35k rpm motors. Different mind set. Different enjoyment.

Good for you. Well said. Of course, we both would run on anything given the chance, but for our own tracks- yeah.

I tried to do the Infineon Raceway but there was a lot of turns that I couldn't get in. Then with the scenery I was afraid it would get damaged when the Grandkids came over to race so I left it off. But it is still fun.
