so I’m at a standstill. Once they arrive I can see how to make mounts for them. Figured I might as well post where I’m at so far.
I’m going for a look similar to these..
…a race car that was run maybe in the 50’s and 60’s, then put in the barn till now when it was discovered and put back in to safe enough
shape to run it. When it was parked 4 decades ago the motor was pulled so I’ll be sourcing a flathead V8 I found up in Maine on Craigslist.
That will get a refresh, and I’ll put a set of wheels and tires on but that’s about it. This is a budget retro racer LOL.
This is the first attempt I’ve ever made at making something look ‘old’.. I watched a couple tutorials online and gave it a go..
I cleaned up the excess resin on the SGD ’40 Ford Coupe, and marked where I wanted to cut..
I made my cuts and beat up the body a bit with the dremel..
Next I brushed on some flat black and let it dry..
Next I painted a section at a time with flat rust colored paint, sprinkling some table salt on the wet areas that I wanted to look rusty..
Once that was dry, I painted the car with a couple light coats of light gloss blue from a Testors rattle can..
Once that was dry, I used my thumb and fingers to rub down the body, scraping off the salt, revealing the rust underneath.
I also used some 800 grit sandpaper to dull the finish and reveal more of the ‘rust layer’ hear and there..
I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised with how it was looking after that step.. but there’s more to do!
I painted on the number and trunk sponsor, and scuffed up the car again with the 800 grit sandpaper.
Then I took a very small amount of the rust colored paint and thinned it, and lightly touched up door seams, and the rusty areas.
I also used some flat black and a bit of tan as well to highlight some areas of ‘oldness’..
I had to come up with an interior tray that looked the part, so I cut some styrene to size and soldered up a crude brass cage..
Can’t have a shiny brass cage in an old car, so I painted that flat white, then used flat rust, black and tan to ‘age the cage’..
I added a window screen and installed the interior.. nothing fancy but it looks looks OK to me..
I do have a chassis started for it.. I’ll be painting the wheels and hopefully finding some better looking tires for it..
I think the front sidewalls are not tall enough.. we'll see what happens~
So that’s where it stands now.. I’ll update the post once the flathead motor is in place and there is progress to report..
