The braid does not cause the guide to sit high. I have tested nearly all models in the past 3 years and in most cases the guide height is simply that the mount is set to high into the chassis, causing the entire guide to not rest properly in the slot.
Do you have to change it? No. Of course not.
But if you are going to tune these models to get them to run smoother and perform better, the FIRST thing I do is remove the stock guide and replace it with a BNOVA system. This allows you to set up the front correctly.
Talking about price, well, either you are willing to invest the funds or you are not. But to clarify, here is the current cost I am spending.
BNOVA adapters are TWO for $5.99.
ScaleAuto Guides are TWO for $5.99
So $6.00 per car is not too much IMHO. If it is for you, then simply run them like they are.
I am testing a new system by D3D now. I will report ASAP the results so we might have another option.
BTW, Carrera has been putting the RED guide blades that are smaller in the back of the cases as of last year. Not all models, but most new releases. So if you just want a different blade, check there.
