Chevy II 3D chassis Build

Thought I would try something different from what I normally do since I just got myself a new printer. Since I can't solder and not much better at cutting the Brass to the right length I went straight to the Inventor. First I fitted a Piranha motor with slot-it gears and flag. I first went with the 15x10 CB Designs wheels and the big 22160FF PG tires. Image It looked pretty good on the screen but then the issues started popping up when I printed it out. First I had it modeled up using 1/16 diameter roll cage but I couldn't get it to print out. So I changed that to 3/32 diameter with a base frame of 3/32 x 1/8. Wow, it printed but I forgot to check one small detail, the flag mount was to far to the rear and would allow the axle to pass. So I moved it forward and everything printed good.Image It took a little over an hour to print and another hour to clean off the support and brim material. With everything looking good and the bare chassis in at 8.3 grams I sent it off to paint. Once the paint was dry I tossed in the piranha motor, gears, wheels, and tires oh my.Image Oh yea, I couldn't resist, I put on 10" drums with rear spring detail and front suspension detail.Image now it weighs in at 53 grams. so I couldn't resist and off to the track i went where it turned in some low 9 second laps as long as I could keep it on the track. The 10/27 gearing may have been a little much for this thing.Image and now it will take some time but I'll start adding the RMS body to it.Image I should be quite a challenge for me now to try and figure out how to add an interior to it while trying to keep the weight down.

Wow , what a great job.
I'm impressed with your design and its performance.
And it looks great with the body on.

Thanks guys. Believe or I used Testor's semi-gloss grey primer and covered it with Rust-oleum orange. Hopefully I'll get the body mounted and ready for paint which will be the Testor's metallic blue.

Started fixing the interior today so I first laid it out to make a few cuts.Image After a little dremel work the fit looks to be ok but i check the fit tomorrow after doing some body work on the fender flares.Image More later.

This car was quite the beast on the track but it definitely needs to weight to get it to stick better. I turned the voltage down to 10.6 and it would still want to get airborne. Then this evening the body was dry enough form the glue on the flares that I thought I would get a quite test fit in. Image Oops the interior is set to high. No worries, I'll just lower the side rails that the interior is setting on, print it out a new chassis and try it again. That is one nice thing about those 3D printers, it doesn't make the Oops so bad. Maybe I could use the old Chassis in another slot that has the same 110 inch wheel base, then I can order more parts from SCC and get some more Dum Dum's.

With such a nicely detailed chassis with roll cage and all, why do you need an interior tray? I hate to see you lose it visually with a big slab of plastic interior over it. You could just add a floor to the bottom of the cage, throw a full figure driver in there with a steering wheel in his hands and call her good. You may or may not have to give him a buttectomy on one side to clear the motor but the majority of him will fit. Paint the motor flat black, of build a motor cover for it if you don't want to see it. It saves weight adds clearance to get your body down where you want it and looks very realistic and cool. Nice Work!
