2015 Ohio Cup race at Route 93 Raceway!

Going to try my hand with my FRAY build in the 2015 Ohio Cup race at Route 93 Raceway today! :D
First event type race I have ever been involved in - so it should be interesting!
Hopefully I won't come in last - but either way - it should be a good time!

WOW! What a great time!!!
I had been to Route 93 Raceway in Akron, OH in the past - but hadn't had a chance to race on the new MAXX track they installed (shown as Track 1 above) - that is one challenging, but fun track to run on! :D

As I mentioned in my first post - this is the first time I have tried my hand at any type of race like this and based on the fun from yesterday - it won't be my last! :D

I arrived at the track at 8:15 to get some practice in and the place was already jumping! The track and event organizers had set up open practice from noon to 9pm on Friday and again for 8am to 10am Saturday and many were there (like myself) to take advantage of the track time!

After practice - all cars had to go through "Tech" while the day's "rules" of what you were and were not allowed to do to your car were announced by the race director.

And of the "Jacks" that were also part of the board, that the cars were placed on. They had a slick design that had a spot for the guide pin to sit in and then then nicely held the balance of the car up off the surface:

Qualifying was set up with random draw to set up the groups of 4 (with two groups having 5 each) - and each of those groups were paired up to have one group marshalling while the other group raced and then everyone would swap.

Qualifying was done in two rounds - the entirety of round one being completed before starting round two.
Both rounds were run with the racing being 2 minutes per lane, through each of the four lanes.
(Track #1 is a MAXX track at 56 foot in length, Track #2 is a WIZTrack at 64 foot in length - both set at 20.3 volts.)

The overall placement for the MAINS was based on the performance through both rounds of qualifying tallied in feet.

I started my run with Track #2 and managed 56 laps, 59 feet (3643 feet).
Next up was the more technical and shorter Track #1 were I managed 47 laps, 39 feet (2671 feet)

Total for round one - 6314 feet - which put me in "29th" at the end of round one! :)

Round #2 of qualifying - I fared slightly better - managing:

Track #2 - 57 laps, 38 feet (3686 feet)
Track #1 - 49 laps, 33 feet (2777 feet)
For a total of 6463 feet - which was a slight improvement in both footage and how I did for the 28th for the qualifying session! :D




One of the things that surprised me in talking with the different racers was how far some had traveled to participate in this race! There were racers from the Carolinas, Alabama and even a gentleman from northern California! :o
Pretty cool to get to race, laugh and joke with guys from various corners of the country! :D

One of the things that was pretty sweet - in addition to having doughnuts in the morning and then both lunch and dinner provided - there were a BUNCH of door prizes given out through out the event - ranging from stickers and wheels to tires, bodies and hats. :D

At the tally of the totals for qualifying - my total footage put me in the "H" main...



For the racing, the format changed slightly in that the lane times increased from two minutes per lane to four minutes per lane on both tracks. :)

Though the course of the racing action, I managed to hold my own, eventually finishing 29th overall and only a half a lap (25 feet) behind the 28th place racer! :banana-dance:

(Note - the racer names start with line 2 - so the line numbers show 1 more than the finish positions on the screen) :)


All in all, a great day of racing with a lot of great people!
Looking forward to participating in something like this again in the future! :D

Oh, one thing I have to mention, as an aside to the event itself - I ran who knows how many feet in practice, and then 25597 feet during the race. (during racing you were not allowed to open the car up - only tape tires, clean pick-up shoes, oil)
This tallied nearly FIVE MILES with the car never skipping a beat!
Pretty cool when you consider that the tires I used are only .334" tall... :o
That is a whoooole lot of revolutions! :D

Hopefully all the "detail" didn't bore anyone - but I have to say, if you have ever thought about giving one of the events a whirl - I HIGHLY recommend it! No matter where you finish - it is a great time! :handgestures-thumbup:

I would think with the 3d printers becoming more widespread that these jacks would be an easy project?
