Carrera front tires

As most of you probably know some Carrera cars had a problem with their front tires disintegrating after a while. Last week I bought some Paul Gage tires that were recommended for replacement and I must say they work fine in that role. I left them unsanded as they look slicker that way. They also work fine as replacements for most slot.it rear hubs.

Yes they work well in any role.

But good option for fronts if the originals cannot be attained.

Bob I wonder if PG tires would be a good choice for front tires. PG tires in most cases give better grip than stock and you don't want any grip in the front. Just a thought. :think:

I never heard about anything like that. I am a fan of PG tires, but I never saw any kind of Carrera tires going bad, other than for very old age, like a dozen years or more. How many people know about this? Respond, please.

It happens. None here except some from 10 years ago that I sanded.

To use PG for the fronts, I brush coat Future over them. About 2 coats. It really reduces the grip & lasts a fair amount of time. Using Future (Pledge Floor Care) is also much quieter than nail polish. I dislike the "marble rolling on glass" sound that nail polish produces.

I wonder if it has something to do with salt in the air near the ocean? I remember when I was a boy, the folks who lived facing the Gulf had different house maintenence tasks than we did on the bayou. It was all about the salt.

Some have reported some bad fronts awhile back. It happens. I have a decent selection of the new releases in the past 3 or 4 years and not a one has went bad. Just something you can't call.

I am going to run a sale on ceramic Fly tires soon. You need any? Or you can paint some lifesavers...same thing :)

I live about 35 miles from the beach. The problem on my cars has been hit or miss. All of mine turned to goo. I don't know whether the rears would have or not as I had already replaced them. I have a working theory. A while back some high end model airplane kits came with rubber tires to mount on the landing gear. If the tire was placed on bare rims the plastic and the rubber reacted with each other causing the same problem and later kits had a warning about painting the rims before mounting the tires and they put the tires in separate bags. Some of my Carrera cars had the front rims sanded to get rid of burrs and maybe those are the ones that melted.

I've had 3 sets turn to goo but they were on older cars. A lot of the other ones are hard as rocks. Nothing in the last few years. I don't live near the ocean.

A while back there were reports that Fly tires had turned to goo (actually I think they said liquid). They were quite old display cars, and I never heard if anyone figured it out. A friend gave me a bagful of Gel Claws because he hated them, and they actually tore in half putting them on a wheels. I tore up several before I found a way to sneak them on wheels. I didn't like them, anyway. They make a great tire barrier. They are already torn in half!

I live 600 miles from the beach and they still turn to goo. After market tires are fine for me on either end.

Well I for one have lots of slot cars... this has happened to about 3 of my Fly cars (after about a year, which now is about 9 year ago) and only about 6 or the hundreds of the Carrera cars I have. Anyone that needs tires replaced I will try to help them get that done...

Ironic thing here. After about a year, my personal 1:1 truck needed tires, I replaced them. Another vehicle that we have that seldom gets used, the tires went bad from dry rot. I replaced them. Seems like anything with a rubber tire on it will need replacement after a while.
I think its pretty cool that Dave offered to help replace some bad tires. My local 1:1 dealer didn't make the same offer.
For the record, none of my Carrera tires have went bad from anything other than heavy usage, and I have a few of them!
Another point of interest, any Racing tire in the 1:1 world has a short shelf life. Most sanctioning bodies will not let you run a tire that's out of date.
Not being argumentative here, I just think we need to accept some responsibility for the maintenance of our little cars, and if that means a set of tires now and then, so be it.
