You can own Ferrari

Postby Czar » Fri Jul 24, 2015 10:22 am

Fiat Chrysler has filed papers with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to offer an Initial Public Offering (IPO) of Ferrari stock on the Wall Street Exchange later this year. That means Ferrari will be bought and sold on the big board, like Proctor and Gamble, Ford, AT&T and thousands of other companies. It will mean a cash infusion for Fiat/Ferrari, but is also fraught with peril for Ferrari. One thing about Wall Street is: investors demand profits. If Ferrari can't produce the profits as expected, investments and share prices will drop, possibly crippling the brand. More likely, it will simply morph into more of a "luxury lifestyle" brand than it already is. If racing cannot translate into sales for Ferrari, stock holders will have every right to redirect the activities of the company to insure themselves more profit. I see an interesting clash between a company that has always put racing performance ahead of everything, and stakeholders who hold profit as the only thing that matters. Now, Fiat owns Ferrari because Ferrari could no longer sustain itself as a viable stand alone company (just like Chrysler). It also seems, to me, that Fiat Chrysler would not want to dilute ownership/control over Ferrari if it were pulling its own weight financially. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

With just a few minor appointments for the interior, a Chrysler navigation system, and the dependability of a Fiat, it seems the Ferrari "Bread van" could make a nice competitor for the Porsche Cayenne.

Just in time to trade in your Ram pickup that is being recalled. They will purchase you vehicle back minus depreciation on the purchase of a new Chrysler product. Do I smell something funny here or did I miss something.

It is actually a much smaller recall than the media is stating - the latest numbers from Allpar.com:

"… repairs have been completed on well over 60% of the subject vehicles, leaving less than two hundred thousand eligible vehicles"

You can thank the Germans that pilfered ChryCo for this. Fiat did not aquire the company until mid-2009. Most of the vehicles in this recall are due to four things:

1) Daimler de-contenting every vehicle and cutting serious corners after draining the company until the sale to Cerebus.
2) Chrysler being held to fix an issue that passed automotive regs when the vehicle was new (Jeep Liberty).
3) Fiat did drag their feet in some cases in the notification, however in many cases was offering $100 gift cards to get people to bring the vehicles in for repair.
4) Customers not bringing the vehicles in (RAM trucks are the exception - 60% already were fixed.

The media hates FCA and loves to bash them. Can't recall hearing much about the hefty fines levied elsewhere in the industry...

Me? Loyal owner since 1993 and with the exception of the 2005 Jeep Liberty my daughter had (built during the dark days of Daimler), all of them have been excellent vehicles.

I think the recall is small potatoes compared to the fines being levied against Fiat Chrysler by NHTSA (National Highway Transportation Safety Administration). A record $105 million dollars, the highest fines ever imposed on a car company in the USA, is the amount Fiat Chrysler will have to pay for their botched handling of safety notifications and recalls involving Jeep and its gas tank placement. Why blame Daimler for doing what a good company is supposed to do? It merely maximized its profit from a bad acquisition. Chrysler proved it was not a viable company on its own. Daimler could not resurrect it, and Fiat has allowed "business as usual" in Jeep's foot dragging over cars/components that were deemed to be unacceptable. Dave, glad you have had a good experience with Jeep. My brother has been a loyal customer for as long as I can remember, and he too has had no problems. And while neither of you are really exceptions, there is enough proof of life threatening issues and problems. Jeep simply denied the problems or ignored them. I am glad that neither you, nor my brother ever had any problems, but that does not excuse Jeep, or Fiat Chrysler's response to real problems that shouldn't have occurred in the first place.
