Looking for pics of Hillman Imp's that raced in TransAm

Postby MoparGreg » Thu Aug 06, 2015 10:11 pm

Hi, I have been debating what car to enter in the upcoming transam proxy. I was thinking of entering something a bit different to mix up the field. For the U2 I would like to enter a mopar, the closest car to a U2 mopar is a Hillman Imp/Sunbeam, so that fills both of my wants.

I spent an hour last night after looking in my Teansam book for liveries that entered in the transam racing. I came up with nothing. I found a few that raced in the UK but none that were raced in the U.S. Any Hillman experts in the house or anyone have some pics of the Hillmans in the T/A U2 class?

Any help would be good. I could do a fantasy paintwork but I do prefer to model of the 1:1

Thanks for the help. I had already googled it and the pics that came up the Imps were raced in the UK and Australia that I can tell. I'm looking for Imps that ran in the U.S. Transam series. Any help would be great, thanks

Wow that is a tuffy Greg.
I think I found one on Google from the First T/A at Sebring in 66.
Thats about it.
There were 2 that ran there but both DNF. So not much coverage of them.
If I come across anything I will send it to you.

Hi Greg, as Bob said, that is a tuffy! I see one ran at Riverside '66 so if you google the driver 'Sinclair Buckstaff Sunbeam Imp' it could lead you somewhere.

Good luck!

Chris.

Car was white and ran the number 42. No pic though. Colour schemes were pretty basic in those days. Would have been a white car with #42 roundels.

Thanks for the detective work. Its a same there is no pieces of the Imps that ran in the T/A events. In my search I found this cool little Imp raced in Australia -

Heres some info I found on it, what a weapon with that rear engined V8 in that light body -

The Harry Lefoe Hillman Imp V8 raced between 1973 and 1978 before it was comprehensively destroyed in a roll over down the back straight at Sandown.
It is believed the remains were dumped.
Powered by a full house Ford Cobra V8 sitting in the back seat area, it reputedly produced over 500HP with 400 lb ft of torque..
Said to be able to lift it's front wheels and with handling best described as extreme, the Lefoe Imp has achieved a cult like status with Aussie Sports Sedan followers

Hi Greg I went looking for it again , to link for you and , its like smoke and mirrors.
The car I saw was #44 Hillman Imp Trans Am in 1966, but I cant find it again
I believe the car itself was a 1965 model.
Sorry Greg, but if I do come across it I will surely notify you.
All the best
