Love sites like this. It's amazing what lies in our local areas that many of us weren't aware of. Being an air history buff, a site I frequent is "Abandoned and Little Known Airfields" (www.airfields-freeman.com/). One of the things you discover is that the one of the first uses many were put to is.....you guessed it; racing cars. I'll be watch this new site and dig to find others like it. Thanks

The Abandoned airfield at Maxton NC, was a glider training base during WW II. It was brought back to life in the late 90's as a Land speed venue on the East coast. In 2007, I set 3 Land speed records on a bike there. It is now gone again when the lease ran out, and is supposed to become a Housing project.
(And Yes Guy's, I have the Gray T shirt to prove it :oops: )

Where was New England Dragway? Was that Sanford? They use to advertise like crazy on the Boston radio stations in the '60's.

No, New England Dragway is in Lee New Hampshire, Sanford is the airstrip where President Bush Jr would land when he was comeing to visit Kennebunkport as president, it's still a private airfield. It was originally a military field during World War 2. What I find interesting is that many of the oval tracks are in tack, just abandoned. A few years ago some people I knew tried to buy a local track and converted into a a private club but the town wouldn't let them keep the track in place saying you would disturb the neighbors even though the only neighbors in the vicinity is an airfield and a couple of industrial park.

New England Dragway is in Epping NH about 6 miles from my house. They still run all summer long and the NHRA visits there once a year on their tour.

Epping also has Star Speedway just down the street from N.E.D. And they run a short track program on Saturday nights. They have special events for midgets, modifieds, super modifieds and touring Late Models.

Lee is the next town north and the have the Lee USA speedway there.... Another weekly short track program with special events.

Racing is alive and well in southern New Hampshire.

I knew I got the town wrong, after I posted. My dad had a car that ran at both of those ovals, along with Pines Speedway in Groveland.
