Lotus Europa build 3

Postby VTECFOUR » Sun Aug 16, 2015 8:34 pm

Finally starting a build using Devised Design products including the FF050 motor narrow chassis, front axle/guide mini carrier and guide.

Image

Got an idea of incorporating a floating chassis pan.

Curious on how it'll compare to my other small car chassis builds with BWA and Winpod motor brackets.

Some progress on the chassis.

Made a perimeter pan of 3/32" square tubing and .016 and .032 strips. Held to the motor pod with four 2mm screws after tapping.

Image

Screw holes in motor pod were slightly enlargened allowing some pan float. Oval hole in pan at back allows pod to be held to body independent of pan.

Will add some side brass pans for some tuning weight later.

Image

Axle/guide carrier is hooked into motor pod with 3/32" piano wire allowing wheelbase changes. I like this feature.

So far so good.

Chassis looks sharp! I have that front guide, needed an example how to use and this is a very nice example. Thanks for sharing.

Wheel arches trimmed and body mock fitted.

Image

Ran out of Ranch Design rims, so a Slot It Ferrari 312 wheel set's being used.

Body mounting's next.

Looks good with the gold Slot.it wheels, do you plan on keeping them?

Made some chassis changes.

Cannabalized a previous build for the Ranch Design rims. The Europa body has enough front overhang to allow the use of Devised Designs longer front axle/guide carrier so it was substituted. Went for a Scale Auto universal guide with a thinner horizontal plane so the wheel/tires are closer to the track.

Getting there.

Chassis's running. Powered by Scalextric red 20K FF050 motor. Geared with Scalextric Sport 9t pinion and SCX Pro 27t crown. Added .032 x 1/2" sidepans.

Runs smooth and has a planted feel. Hoping it`s as good after mounting the body.

Windows cut and filed out. Body's mounted with the desired stance.

Image

The Devised Designs extended axle/guide holder let me maximize the guide to rear axle distance. Handles just as well as my build 2 and is planted through the corners.

Image

Quite pleased with the performance as I can keep up with stock Slot It cars.

Primer's next and then a traditional Lotus finish, green with yellow stripes.

Some progress. Body sprayed with Tamiya fine grey primer and then TS43 Racing Green. Rims, bumpers, window trim and gas cap accented with Tamiya Light Gray bottle paint. Striped with Pactra trim tape.

Window installation and interior tray to come.

Image

Runs well with good straight line speed and confident cornering.

I like the Devised Designs motor and front axle/guide brackets for small car builds.
