MRRC cars - what do you think?

Postby slothead » Mon Nov 02, 2015 12:04 pm

As I continue to think about where I'd get cars to race against a Fly Ford GT40, I noticed MRRC makes several cars from the same era. The Ford GT is my first Fly slot car, and I have no experience with MRRC at all.

I'm also curious about other manufacturers that make cars that races at Le mans, Sebring, Daytona, etc. during the later part of the 60's.

Look For NSR and Slot-it brands, they each have a good selection from that era.....
...both have better detail and performance. Worth every penny in price difference IMHO.

They are ok. Not really out of the box compatible with your Fly car.

I take it you are willing to perform advanced tuning on this list of models to get them to run pretty much evenly?

Fly and Flylot, along with some SRC is the major source for classic LeMans, etc. Revogram made a few, MRRC, Sloter, Spirt, etc.
But most are harder to find and the price isn't much better unless you find a deal.

Basically we have depended upon Fly/Flyslot for the bulk of our classic LeMans over the years.

Scalextric makes a nice GT40 and Slot.it makes the best overall IMHO. NSR makes one but very costly.

I like some of the MRRC cars a lot; especially their Porsche 911. I think, overall, that they make a nice product. The motors that they supply are also, in my opinion, underrated.

Really depends if you plan on racing it? They look nice but don't go well without severe modifications, especially if you race without magnets. The easiest way to get good racing is to go like for like brand wise.

I believe the 904 ran against it in the mid 60's didn't it? Carrera has a current model.

MRRC is a pretty old company that extended all of the way back to the 1960's. There were several generations of MRRC all of which were very different and all had flaws and strengths. I will speak to the more modern ones that were made in the last decade or so.. Their history runs somewhat parallel to Revell Monogram as they shared a lot of bodies and parts in some cars. They made great models that no one else ever made. I like their mid year cars with the C can motor the best but the red can motor used was an absolute rocket that was in no way appropriate to the models they were put in nor the small home tracks that most of their cars were raced on. The latest generation were all mounted to their Sebring chassis that some people like but others not so much. I liked them well enough although their thin can motor was rated at around 20,000 RPM which was a little too hot for the models they were used in. If you put a sub 18k motor such as the one that Mark Thomas sells, you have a good combo. I don't ever recall getting an MRRC car that didn't run well because of wobbly wheels or axles so I would say the quality was as good or better than some of the other boutique slot car producers. I think I recall that Harry did a tuning article on the Sebring chassis.

Thanks guys. I bought the used Fly Ford GT40 just to try the brand and it runs about the same as my better Pioneer and Scalextric Trans Am cars on the road course. It was a pleasant surprise. I have more than enough Trans Am cars and am considering getting another type of cars from that era for another class.

I'd rather not buy cars that will then need tuning to be equal, that's why I'm asking so many questions. The Scalextric and Pioneers Trans Am cars are all pretty equal. Neither brand has a consistent advantage and minor tire and weight modifications have kept the field tight. I'm hoping for the same with a second class of cars.

I think I'll buy a Carrera Porsche 917 and see how it compares with the Fly, and if that's okay start filling out my field with some of those reasonably priced models. I'm leaning towards following Harry's advice and opening the field to Can Am cars from the same era and having much a wider selection.

Thanks again for all your input. No one in my everyday world would even know what I was talking about.

As I continue to consider cars to race against a FLY Ford GT40, this MRRC car is a possibility.

The Chaparral 2F below is on the Electric Dreams website for $39.99.

This Monogram Chaparral is listed at $49.99

The MRRC & Monogram Chaparrals use the same Sebring chassis - and I might try one along with the Carrera Porsche 917.

You might also want to consider the clubman special kits. They appear to be a bit expensive but when you discover what they come with the expense seems reasonable. First the chassis fits any of the cars that use the sebring chassis. It comes with three FC130 size motors, 16K, 20K and 26K rpms. Four set screw hubs for 3/32 axles with bronze bushings with decent tires. The kits are available with two different Ferraris and a King cobra from the late 1960's. Also a Porsche 904 which I don't recommend because it is too narrow. They also have two pro style guides and a lot of hardware.
