What's The Closest You Came to Experiencing a 1:1 Slot Car?

Postby pgtr » Thu Nov 12, 2015 8:03 pm

If you were shrunk by a factor of 32 or if you could increase the size if your car(s), track....

So what's the automotive experience you've had that comes closest to what it would be like to zip around in a 1:1 slot car...?

Boy, that is really easy.

Raced 250 superkarts for years. Out accelerates an F1 car and sticks to the track like a slot car with magnets. Top end over 150 on big road racing tracks.

My SCCA G production 914. 1600 pound car with sticky 12 inch wide racing slicks, a beefed up 4 banger and a very low center of gravity. A little more like racing a slot car without magnets but still stuck like it was glued to the track. In 3 years only spun it twice and both times were in the rain.

Easy, test track at Disney. It is a 1 to 1 slot car setup.

Clubman kart when I used to race before being married with kids. 110km/h with your butt 1" off the ground, hitting the anchors and fighting the rear end so it wouldn't over take you as you whipped it through the hairpin.

With kids and wife, rollercoaster at seaworld.

Another autocrosser here. 1974 Alfa Romeo spyder, Modified class, lowered, Ward & Dean suspension, hopped up 2.0L motor, Panasports, Yoko A001Rs. It was definitely stuck to the track - most of the time (for an Alfa, that is............ ).

69 COPO Camaro, 427 built by a well known short track racing shop along with the suspension. Never found the top end, glued to the road on a good day, on a good road, too much on a New England fall day with leaves on the ground. I only took it out once in the rain, too much torque equals lots of wheel spin and little control, at any speed, wouldn't move when it got cold, the tires would just spin.

This car was way more than any 16 year old should own. 1590 lbs., fiberglass body, twin cams, pair of weber side drafts, handled like a, well, you know. Even with just a skinny set of Michelin radials this car was stuck to the ground. Made many trips to the local slot car track in that thing. Sadly, a few months after this photo I was struck hard just behind the door jam by a drunk driver. Insurance paid to patch it back together but Mom forbade me ever driving it again. Recently found the car is undergoing nut and bolt restoration about 30 miles from home by the same guy I sold it to all those years ago. Some slot car buddies tracked it down.

89' mustang gt wasn't go kart quality but was still fun auto crossing, track days at Cal speedway and Willowsprings.

well, I've raced an FF too (a Lotus 61E doorstop, second worst handling car I ever drove), as well as an old Lotus 19/23 sports when I started back in the day, and later also Limited Sportsman dirt mods, which was totally outrageous. but none of those handled like a slotcar to me; real race cars and slotcars are entirely two different animals. (I've had some pretty good road cars too, and one modified '69 Mustang comes to mind. had an F150 with huge swaybars a while back that would rotate in the middle of a corner like nobody's business too, but it did Not act like a slotcar.)
acceleration aside, the closest thing in my handling dept. has to be my old '87 BMW E30, which I still have. my daughter agrees- you hammer That one too hard in a corner, and it tries to come off!

(man, i never ran the quarter mile, but that drag roller coaster is outasight!)
