Re: McLaren vs McLaren - A Comparison of Drive Configuration

Postby Florida_Slotter » Tue Jan 12, 2016 3:10 pm

After sitting and contemplating the information above, I decided to do a comparison of an FC130 motor in an anglewinder vs a Flat-6 motor in an anglewinder configuration.

I had a set of adaptors from Slot Car Corner, so I replaced the Flat-6 motor in my Sideways Porsche 935 Jagermeister with a Slot.It FC130 orange endbell motor.

Prior to the change, the Porsche weighed in at 82 grams. After the change, the scales registered 68 grams. H'mmm, that's a loss of 14 grams or about a 17% reduction in weight.

I know that you can simply screw the FC130 motor into place, but the adaptors space the motor so the center of the armature segment stack is centered over the slot. Kind of keeps right and left turns equal.

This past weekend I had planned on making a trip over to DeBary Glen Raceway and do some testing with my good friend ModlerBob. But it was not a good weekend for me as it turns out. I had a very pain filled weekend, so I just stayed in bed and took lots of pain medication. Hopefully this coming weekend will work out for a trip.

During my limited testing at home at my 1:43 GO layout (yes, it is like driving one of John Force's Funny Cars on a Go-Kart track) and while it was hard to do any measuring, what I did notice all pointed in a positive direction. I noticed the car seemed to accelerate quicker, stop in a shorter distance and appeared to be more planted in the turns, without a lap timer to verify this, it's kind of a "feelie thingie". But with some more testing, then we can see some real data.

Stay tuned!

In my bench testing Slot It motors of the same type, they have a wide range of performance peramiters especially magnetic downforce. I have measured up to 20g of variation in magnetic down force for a single model of motor installed in the same car, by swapping out motors.

Love the detailed comparison!
Looking forward to hearing what "on track" performances are!

Would be really good to compare oranges with oranges. Can you test the same motor in an inline, sidewinder and anglewinder configuration? Testing two different motors in the various configurations you don't know whether the improvement is coming from the motor, the different weight distribution or if you race on plastic track, from the different mag downforce.

Comparing the left to right "downforce" I think you need to place the entire wheel (left or right) onto the central magnetic bar so that no portion is touching the platform. Otherwise its always going to read the same value. I find it almost impossible to believe the weight distribution is a perfect left/right distribution for an anglewinder or sidewinder. Perhaps just use two digital scales and place the left/right wheels on the two scales would be easier? When placing lead in the chassis (if needed) I usually try and get the left/right distribution the same.

I have the F1GTR in both configurations and I still prefer the inline setup as I find it easier to consistently turn fast laps even though my anglewinder has turned a faster lap.

I believe the stock IL gearing on that car is 9:26...

After reading all of this I decided to try putting a slot.it FC130 Orange endbell motor in my Avant slot Kremer Porsche. The motor it comes with is way too much for a short track. After installing the slot.it motor in the anglewinder configuration the Kremer became my quickest car in the fleet. The FC130 motor works perfectly in the anglewinder motor pod, even without support at the other end. I am going to try this setup in one of my slot.it LMP Lolas next.

ModlerBob,

My friend, you KNOW I WOULD never SAY "I TOLD YOU SO"! So I won't.

Thank you for doing some testing. The pain is getting worse each day. I want to come over, but I'm afraid I would not be good company.

Perhaps someone could come out with an anglewinder pod that is designed specifically for the FC-130 motor. Ever since I saw the anglewinder pod, I've thought half of the capability of this configuration has been exercised.

We both are aware that over on the commercial side of slot car racing, anglewinders are the most popular.

I discovered Friday night that it is impossible to put a FC130 motor in any of the new slot.it LMP cars. One of the reasons they went with the flat 6 motor is it's height. I assume it was because they didn't want to distort the rear deck contours of the cars like other manufacturers have. The FC130 can is just too tall to fit in the space. So instead I installed the Piranha motor in my Avant Slot Mirage. While it didn't make it any quieter it did smooth out the acceleration and delivered a faster lap.

ModlerBob,

I had not tried it on an LMP type of car. My FC130 is installed in my Jagermeister Porsche Group 5 car. Lots of room in that car.

Very glad to hear you are experiencing what I felt when testing on "Martin's Ville". After running some warm up laps, I turned the wick up and the car just responded.

I wonder why none of the manufacturers have not looked at this configuration? From preliminary testing, it sure does look like a good way to go.
