I admit spending too much on slot cars, too many cars and too much for some cars. But it's my thing and so far I can afford it. But, it's also what you get for your money and what message the purchases send to the market.
Such as, I bought 3 Carerra cars in December, a Porsche 917K and two Cheetahs, for just slightly more than one Fly car. The Carerras ran great right out of the case while about 50% of the Fly cars I've purchased have to be tuned before even running one lap. Yet I've purchased almost 4 times as many Fly cars as Carerra because they offer liveries of 1960's & 70's Le Mans type cars I've started racing. So, while I complain about poor quality here on HRW, the message my purchases are sending to the market say 'keep on selling junk with nice bodies, I'm dumb enough to keep buying them regardless of the price'. I'm shooting myself in the foot if I expect anything to change when I'm rewarding a manufacturer for making shoddy stuff.
I have no problem spending the money for Jules' Pioneer cars or Scalextric cars because they always run acceptably out of the box. If the livery is what you want and the product works as expected, it's worth the price being asked. Yes, I'll give Carrera cars a good look because they are worth it. But what's most important for me is to stop supporting manufacturers who ship cars that don't even run and assume I'm going to continue being a customer any way.
If volume is the key to reasonable prices both Carerra and Pioneer can count on me to do my part.
