I'm so embarrassed. Its just like the time I called that girl a thespian when I was surrounded by people in the lobby of a theater. No impulse control, I guess.

All the slots are cleaned and the tops gets one more sanding for good measure.



Now I take a car and walk it through the lanes. Just making sure all is smooth and ready for the gains to be routed.



And we are ready. Time to get the router set for the proper gain depth.

I like the sandpaper wrapped around the emery board- that's smooth. (so to speak)
as is the super glue- I never would have thought of that one! :text-thankyouyellow:
I find that if you catch the bondo in the rubbery stage, it's easy to cut off the excess with a sharp flat blade, it doesn't pull out and the small remainder is easy to sand smooth. that stuff''s pretty much all I use.
I wrap shims with wax paper and stick 'em in the slot when I make a routing error too wide on the corners and then force the mud down in the gaps so I don't have to reroute the slot. then I cut it off when it's half-hardened which reduces the finishing work dramatically.
if I could remember how photobucket works I'd put up a couple pix of my test track construction, which is the last one I did, with my daughter. when we got it running, we ended up redoing several feet of it around a couple corners which were just too convoluted; undriveable, even for me. you can sand that stuff as smooth as a desktop, and this track is laminated formica- you almost can't tell.

who makes the cool little plunge router with the vacuum hose connection? is that a Ryobi?

looks like that's pretty good food that you guys have there. now I'm hungry.

The router is a Performax that is made by Ryobi for Menard's. This outfit worked like a charm.

well, I just tried and I can't even log into them right now. I'd really like to get it back myself. somewhere I have a note...
(the pix I was referring to aren't up there yet anyway, because I never had a reason. I'll add 'em when I get the transfer bit to work again. I could email you a couple for this effort if you want while I'm trying to figure it out. I didn't think that what we did was anything special, just got it done, I've made a ton of tracks, but I guess that it might be somewhat relevant here- this is a good instructive thread, and this is just another technique.)

Ok, the first "soaker coat" is laid down.



I call it that as that is just what it will do, soak in. I usually give it 3 coats. I like the rubber build up and longevity of 3 coats.



It's from Lowe's called Vessel Gray. I bought 3 shades and to be honest, any one of them would have worked. This seems to look good and will show the rubber build up over time nicely.
