"The family of Andy Hampton has informed us that Andy was admitted
to the hospital for emergency surgery on Friday to address a reoccurring medical condition.
He has been placed in a medically induced coma to increase the chances of success. The
doctors expect to reverse his condition later this week. Andy Hampton is a virtual icon to
Fairgrounds Motor Speedway and the Kentuckiana auto racing community as a whole. Let's
all give him and the Hampton family our prayers for a successful recovery. More details as
they are released by the family.

ANDY HAMPTON UPDATE: According to family members, Andy is not out of the woods yet
so to speak, but he has been successfully brought out of a medically induced coma. He is
responsive and will remain in ICU for a few weeks. The doctors have said he is doing better
than expected so far. We will pass along any further information as it becomes available from
the family. We continue to ask for your prayers for the 88 year old Kentuckiana auto racing legend. Thank you. "

I remember as a kid watching this local racer, at our hometown track, through his ARCA career and on to Daytona. I was also fortunate to live down the street and stayed in contact with his son off and on through the years. Was able to supply Dave K. from Carrera phone contact information to I assume seal the deal for the replica car. Thoughts and prayers to him and family.

ANDY HAMPTON UPDATE #2: I'm sorry folks, there is no other way to say this, so I'll let the message from the Hampton family say it:

"The complications from his surgery have taken their toll on him and his body is not responding and he has decided to discontinue any further treatments. He has chosen to seek Palliative care to make him comfortable. We appreciate all of your concern, prayers, and for keeping others updated on his situation. "

THE CHECKERED FLAG HAS WAVED (ANDY HAMPTON HAS PASSED AWAY): It truly breaks my heart to report that at approximately 12:30 PM EST today, April 1, 2016, Andy Hampton, age 88, passed away peacefully, knowing he had led a full life. He was diagnosed and treated for cancer 20 years ago, but the disease had returned recently.

He was one of the Louisville area’s most successful dealers of pre-owned automobiles, having several locations in the area for several decades.

He won five consecutive track championships at Louisville’s Fairgrounds Motor Speedway, no driver has accomplished that feat at any area speedway’s since. He won the Figure Eight track championships in 1961, 1962 and 1963. He won the speedway’s New & Late Model track championships in 1964 and 1965 driving Pontiacs prepared by the late Harry Hyde. In fact, he amassed the most total points in both racing divisions combined in a single season and won the speedway’s Official Pace Car, a 1964 ½ Mustang convertible.

A winner of major events, he co-drove with the late Jack Purcell and won the speedway’s 1961 “Kentucky Stock Car Derby”, a 500-lap race event. In 1967, he co-drove with Bill Kimmel of Clarksville and together they won the ARCA sanctioned “International 500”.

In 1968, he won the “ARCA 300” in a 1967 Dodge Charger at Daytona International Speedway and one of his best friends, another top FMS star… Jesse Baird (also in a Dodge) finished in Second Place, both outdistancing upstart Benny Parsons in a Ford. The following week, after changing engines, NASCAR allowed Hampton to start the “Daytona 500” in 50th place and he finished in the Top Ten against the best stock car drivers in the World.

He won another “ARCA 300” in 1972 at Daytona International Speedway, this time driving a 1969 Ford Talledega for car owner, Jack Bowser. To this day, no other driver from the Louisville area has ever won the ARCA event at Daytona although the distance has been reduced to 200-laps. He still ranks near the Top Ten in all-time race victories on the ARCA series circuit.

Spent many a Friday night in the early sixties watching Andy race at the Fairgrounds in Louisville. He was a bigger sports hero in this town than a lot of people new. Watching races between he and Jesse Baird are still etched in my mind. Prayers to his family. Hillbilly

I send my condolences to Andy's family, friends, and fans, and have decided to add the Carerra version of his car to my race field. After having selected his car multiple times on hobby sites, then not finishing the purchase, I ordered one this morning from SCC along with PG tires.

The banner on the backstretch of my oval reads. 'Endless Summer Racing Series - where everything good that ever was, still is'. Andy Hampton, Benny Parsons, Davey Allison, Wendell Scott and others will be racing together under the lights again soon, and into the future.
