Racing Art

Postby BARC 1 » Tue Aug 30, 2016 4:15 pm

Not sure where to post a topic like this, but the model was 1/32 so I chose here.

I got online and searched out some suitable racing backdrops. Using photoshop I dropped in my 1/32 scale 917, and did some computer magic on the digital image to come up with this "art"

Image

I print these out on Watercolor art paper, and when framed they make a nice picture. It is fun to use the models you build for subject matter like this.

Cheers

Love those 917s. The finished product looks pretty cool, Rich.
I doubt I'll get to see one at Lime Rock Park this coming Monday, unfortunately!

I like the SVRA's motto. "Some people collect art... We race it".

In 2014 they had their first event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. There were 710 vintage race cars there. In 2015 they had 650, I don't know how many they had this year. Next year they are going to have an open wheel only event the week before their main event. If you would like to see hundreds of vintage race cars at one time and be able to get right up to them you need to come to Indy. General admission gets you into the infield, Gasoline Alley, the Formula One garages and pit row to talk to the racing legends.

Now that I am retired I would like to make it to an event like that, sounds like racing heaven.

Re artwork

I find the picture taking and subsequent computer manipulation of the digital images of these scale models a lot of fun. Between my model railroad , rc tanks and now slot cars, I have a lot of subject matter to play with. It is nice to see what others are doing in this as well

Cheers

Thanks for the cool images, guys!

teamwild --

Thanks for posting the entry list for everyone here, I've been checking in on that every couple of days for the past few weeks. Looking forward to The T/A event especially, I haven't been to the Lime Rock Park Historic Festival for the past few years. The last time I did see vintage Trans Am cars at LRP was really cool, but seeing 38 of them at Laguna Seca in 2003 at the FORD Centennial of Racing was simply awesome! It seems like LRP has decided to put aside the heavy GT prototype class (I forget exactly what it was called) for this year. Group 8 is similar, but they're not really the big bore endurance type cars. Perhaps due to lack of entries, time constraints because of the T/A event or other circumstances, I don't know and forgot to ask when ordering the tickets on the phone. That's usually my annual favorite where the Ford GT, 427 Cobra, Corvette GS, high end Porsche and Ferrari, Lola T70, IMSA coupes, ect. run in. Basically the cars many of us came to know and love through our slot car racing hobby, right? 2003 featured a Ferrari 512 Le Mans car (it's image was on the programs and T-shirts at Laguna Seca just a few weeks earlier), and another year there was a man with a very rare Ferrari 312PB - the sound that thing made was pure music to any race fan's ears!
I saw a terrific battle at LRP a few years back between a Lola-Chevrolet T70 Mk III, IMSA Spice-Ferrari prototye and an Alfa Romeo T33. The Lola and Spice raced hard, passing each other numerous times during the race, followed closely by the Alfa. From our vantage point on the outside of the Sam Posey straight (near the pedestrian bridge), we saw dust come up from the backside of the track on the last lap and knew somebody had gone off. Then the Alfa appeared over the bridge and came down the hill for the win! If I remember correctly both the Lola and the Spice had gone off. Anyone who thinks these guys don't go for it in vintage races has got to go see one for themselves - that one was very enjoyable, to say the least. I believe Fly slot cars made a 1/32 replica of the Lola, #44 in yellow with a red/white stripe. I may have even purchased one for my collection just because I witnessed that race. And if I did, it's packed away in the basement right now because of space constraints at the moment, so I couldn't say for sure!

Now... I just hope the effects of tropical storm Hermine don't ruin the weekend for the entire east coast!
Wishing everyone a SAFE and FUN holiday weekend. Enjoy! -- Ernie :>)

There are a couple of nice watercolor pieces I found here:

Look for the Ferrari and the James Dean pictures. A lot of cool aviation art as well. I bought a couple. Nice compliments to the man cave.

It never occurred to me to do anything like what you guys have done with photos of your cars. How neat to have racing art of slot cars in settings that look like full size racing action.

I saved the image of the Porsche 917 and the color image of the cars on dirt. If no one objects I might print them on photo paper and consider putting up in my mancave or office shelves.

Though my plastic car modeling skills haven't produced anything I'd want to display recently, I do have some photo paper dirt modified cars I'm proud of. Since I've never added drivers I'd need to limit myself to lineups and victory lane, but still might be worth a try.

What have you guys been using as software for special effects? The 'image viewer' programs that are part of the basic stuff in Windows can do some effects, but I don't know how much.
