H.O. Build-Super Modified

I started this build about 2 weeks ago but is still in it's beginning stages.



Took an old Hot Rod body and grafted the rear section of a Gran Prix racer to it. Had to put a gusset
piece in the back in order to mount it made from some sheet plastic. After it was tacked on the back
I use a mixture of old body plastic and Testors 3502 cement to fill everything in which not only is a filler
but also bonds the plastic together.



After drying, everything is sanded and low spots filled, I opened and filled the old wheel well openings. We then went
to work on the chassis. Chassis is a stock Aurora Magnatraction with all the do dads removed and sanded down smooth.




After the chassis prep, Body was checked for fit and the nose removed. New wheel openings were marked and opened up.
The nose was cut to fit and reattached in the same manner as the rear. The nose was then molded in and side bubbles removed.
The cockpit was also removed and the sides cut down some.



New side panels were then made and cut to fit and all seams filled and sanded.



Tools are fairly simple , an old Dremel lots of knifes and some homemade stuff. Sheet plastic, CA and goop.

This is where the build is right now. It's coming along, Still have to figure a way to mount it yet.

Body work on the super mod is completed for now. A friend of mine wants
to cast it as it is right now, so we put some primer on it and cleared the body
so I can send it to him. Came out pretty good.






It will need resanded when it comes back and some other things done to it.
So right now I will be on hold till it returns.

Cool build!! I'm not familiar with HO scale..I know of it, but no knowledge of it...
Is HO scale also connected to a numerical basis eg. 1:64?
I like the complete filling, attaching and making a "new" body, super!

My body has come back from casting and have started working on making a post for the front.



Harvested a post from a junk body and cut to fit. It needed a slight taper to conform to the
nose and allow everything to fit. Before attaching it though, decided to open the nose up
for some grill work. This is much easier to do before the post is set.


This will probably be filled with some screen after paint. The post is held on with a small screw through
the frame which was drilled and then countersunk so the screw was flush with the frame.


Still need to sand the inside of the body where the post will attach to bare plastic in order to get
a good bond. After it all drys good,we can get on to the fun stuff.

That is some nice work!!!

With the post set,started working on the driver and the cage. The Grand Prix racer
body that I took the rear off of also donated its driver. He fills the hole pretty good
and sits high in the car as he should.





Cages and bumpers are made from paper clips. Tools are simple. I use a cutter to cut them straight and
a flat nose pliers without the ridges to bend them with. A Dremel with a cut off wheel to grind them
to size once shaped. Don't usually measure anything just cut and bend things by eye and
test fit till it looks right and fits well.
Unlike you guys with the big cars, I have no room to solder things together, so everything
is glued one piece at a time using Loctite CA or Loctite 380 Black Max depending on the attachment point.
After all that has setup for a day or so, it all gets sanded and shaped to form a clean joint.
It's a lot of work but worth the effort in the end.

Still much work to do on this car but it's starting to take shape.

Started working on the cage. The main bar was bent to fit over the width of
the gear plate. With the body on, height was set and the bar tacked in place.
Once the tack set up, the body was removed and the bar secured in place with
some Loctite 380 and left to set overnight. The excess was then removed by
light scraping to form a clean joint. The gear plate will be sanded with some
2000 grit paper to polish it up.


The rest of the pieces are then bent and ground to fit using a Dremel with a cut off wheel.



This picture is a little off cause it's hard to hold the piece in the right place and work
the camera at the same time, but you can get the idea. Each piece of the cage is cut,ground
and fit the same manor. Each being attached to the gear plate and then to the main bar.



After all the pieces are glued in place, all the joints are cleaned up and sanded to form clean joints.
Quite a few paper clips don't make it through the first time but get used in other places along the way,
not an exact science here. Mostly trial and error on bending them. Have a few more pieces to bend up
before this is finished. Once done we can move on back to the body and start putting some detail
on it.

Most of the cage is finished. Started putting the x-brace in.




With the body on things are getting a little tight. Will have to open the body up a little
to clear the cage and modify the driver some to so he fits, but I figured on that anyway.





The pencil marks are where the cuts will be made. Just some reliefs with a round file to clear the
cage so it dosen't drag when painted. Will be able to start some bumpers pretty soon. She's starting
to take shape and look like something.

The x-brace is complete and finishes off the cage.




The diver needed to be modified a little to fit. With the cage in there he turned out
to be a little to big and would not fit with the body on. So we put him on a diet
so he would fit.






All in all the cage turned out well. Still a little clean up and sanding to do but not to much.
Not much room to work in this area and progress is slow but it will get there.

Added a few things, started working on a small cowl in front of the cage also the
cage looked like it was missing something so we added a small headrest to it.




Gathering up some parts to try out and see what works.



Have a couple sets of injectors to try and found a head for the driver, his body came from the
same car that supplied the tail piece and the other parts from some other cars in the junk box. As with most
things in HO, parts either have to fabed or swiped from other cars.



Planning to use these wheels on the car, they are Road Race Replica wheels. I usually
use stock wheels, but I think these will look better than the Turbines on the finished car
and they are chrome. We'll save the other ones for something else.

Started working on the roof for the little Super Mod. While looking around, thinking I may have to scratch build
one, ran into an unlikley donor. Found an old Peterbuilt truck in the parts box and borrowed the roof from it.



After cutting the roof off, fitted it up and cut the back window out.



Worked out well and attached it to the body after filling the holes the the pipes went into. Still in the drying process
and will add filler as it drys and shrinks.




The roof gives the right effect to the body for this style car. We'll sand this first pass of filler and proceed
from there. It's coming along little by little.
