Almost Finished

While the little roadster is in the build off, we found this other hot rod lurking in the corner.
We started working on it also. This is an old vibe body since it has no side bubbles.
We'll just call this one hot rod 2. Started by cutting the front off and trimming it to
fit the chassis. Then cutting the back leaving just the trunk lid intact.






Interior was removed and body lowered on the chassis.



After trimming the body to clear the rear wheels, we started building a rear deck for it.
Sides where filled in with sheet plastic along with the rear.




A notch was made to clear the gear, and the gap between the the side of the deck and the body will also be
filled, which will close the void between the two.



What we have so far looks pretty good. This body is a little rough, with gouge marks all over it and
will take some work to smooth out once the fab work is complete. We will see what happens.

Got a lot of the body work done and the hood is in place. A little different configuration
on this one.





The line on the hood is a cut line to set the radiator shroud back behind the front axle which will be
fashoned from sheet and shaped.
She still has some wrinkles in her to straighten out, but coming along.

Built a nose for the white hot rod and added a little fishtail to the back. However
the nose didn't work out so well. By the time I got done with it it looked terrible.
So we cut it off and started over.



After shortening the hood a touch to get some clearence for the axle, mounted the new nose
to the hood. This one fits between the frame and reaches the bottom of the frame.



After everything drys good, we'll cut it out for a radiator and mount it in the cut out.



We'll use the back of this Chaparral as the grill work on the back make nice
radiators. Some are already black to start with. Once painted they can be highlighted
with some silver to bring out the mesh.
After this is complete , we can start on the roof and cage.

That is a mixture of Testors 3502 liquid cement and scrap plastic
from old bodies. Cut the pieces up small and put them in the cement.
they will melt and form a slurry. It can be used thick or it can be thinned by adding more
cement. Some guys mix the color of the body they're using so it matches, I'm not that
fussy. This batch happened to turn out green because of the colors of plastic mixed together.
It actually melts the plastic together to form a bond. Since it's the same plastic
the sanding rates are the same as the filler is not harder or softer than the surrounding
plastic. Its not instant dry, takes a few days to set up and dry good, sometimes longer
but I,m in no hurry and usually have something else to work on while it's drying.
A friend of mine Bill Hall who does some great restoration work and custom building turned me on to
to this and I've been using for awhile now mostly as a filler.

Worked a little on the white hot rod. In keeping with the old Super Modified theme
mocked up a roof for it.



An old Tyco truck donated it's top for the cause. It's a little big right now and has a bunch
of holes in it, but nothing that can't be fixed. It fits the lines of the car well and should
work out.






There are some things on the inside that need to be cleaned up before it's mounted
after that the window lines can be opened up and the roof trimmed to fit. May open
the top up to cut down on filling but we'll see what happens.

Roof for the white hot rod is now mounted. A piece of sheet plastic was attached to the rear to
cover up the large hole created when cutting the roof of the truck body. A new rear window will be
cut after molding it in as shape and size has yet to be determined.




The roof is now in the process of being shaped to the roof lines and molded to the shape of the body.
The side windows were opened up using the window lines molded into the roof and shaped back to
meet the body at the interior bucket.
Once the molding process is finished the top will be cut out to get rid of all the holes left from all the
Tyco do dads on top after they were removed.




Body is taking shape and coming around nicely. We'll let all this dry good and go back to the build off car
for awhile.

Went back to work on the white hot rod. Opened up the roof and a back window.






The exsisting holes in the roof prevented making it square, so we just
followed the outside of the holes and went from there. May make the back window
a little bigger, not sure yet. Kinda like the small one. Need to search the junk box
and come up with some more parts.
