Latest Scalextric Sidewinder GT3 Aston Martin Vantage

Postby Modlerbob » Wed Mar 28, 2018 7:46 pm

I bought this slot car purely because of the name badge but I was pleasantly surprised when it won the race tonight at my home track, DeBary Glen. I drove it against two of the new inline GT3s. The Gulf liveried Porsche 911GT3 and the Turner Racing BMW Z4. Over the course of 4 three minute heats I was able to squeak past the Gulf Porsche by a little over 1/2 lap. It does have the new Scaley green endbell motor in it and for a sidewinder from Scaley it is relatively quiet and smooth running.

BTW if you haven't noticed Electric Dreams has the Scaley Gulf Porsche 911 GTR for sale for $119.95. A case of supply and demand. The Gulf liveries all sold out fast. Luckily I got mine for $45 when they first came out.

Congrats. Motors are the same regardless of endbell color. I have tested several and they all are within a few hundred rpm.

Maybe it was the driver?

I don't know about the new motors with white endbells but these motors, it seems to me are somewhat faster than the older Scaley FC130 motors from a couple of years ago and older. We were all using the new green endbell motor.

I'll check for an official answer but I believe it's ONLY a change in the end bell plastic color.

Electric Dreams has two white endbell motors from Scalextric listed. One the older one with a low part number rated at 18k rpm and a new one with a part number C8XXX that is still rated by Scalextric at 18k rpm but Electric Dreams claims turns at 20k rpm. It has some gold clear tape wrapped around it with some numbers stamped on it while all the older ones I have, have either a white wrapper, a black wrapper or no wrapper.. I bought one of the new ones with the gold clear tape and it arrived today. Later tonite after I'm back from racing in Holly Hill I'll do some testing vs. one of my older but unused scaley 18k rpm motors to see if there is a difference in lap times using the same car as a test bed. I will use one of my slot.it cars as a test bed. I don't have any other means of testing at my disposal.

Most of the Electric Dreams listings for motors were stolen from the list my Uncle Rob made for my website Slot Car News... I'll wait to hear from my co-workers at Scalextric.

I have run my tests with a very small sample, one of the new green endbell motors, one of the older scalextric white endbell motors and the newest scalextric white endbell motors from electric dreams. I used a slot.it McLaren M8 sidewinder chassis with endbell drive. All other components of the car were same parts including the pinion gear. I ran 20 laps with each set up and 20 laps with the original orange endbell slot.it motor. The older white endbell motor was quicker than the new one by only 0.2 seconds per lap at best. The new green endbell motor was 0.4 seconds per lap quicker and the slot.it motor was 0.5 seconds faster yet. For such a small sample there is no statistical difference between the three scalextric motors.

Ok so what you're describing is less likely any actual difference in difference in spec of a motor but more likely a production variation in motors. One thing my Uncle found out (by putting together that source information on motors that's been copied) is that there is a pretty wide variation in motor speeds even within the same spec of motors. This is pretty common knowledge of racers where guys will buy several of a certain type of a motor and road test each one to see which is the fastest.

When motors are just batch motors with a value of only a dollar or two.....there's gonna be variations. The wires cheap and the magnets aren't all the same etc.....but I love classes that use em. For now, I'll take the green though if given a choice.

Costs of production in China are much less than a dollar for a motor ;)
