Well, my excuse is that the Revell-Monogram Donahue Sunoco T70 is so gorgeous one really does not need any excuse to get it. And in this case, the price was right...
But we all also know that out the box, R-M T70's do not run all that well. So I decided on a re-chassis. And what would be more logical than to fit a Thunderslot T70 chassis under the R-M T70? In any case: I wanted to try out the hard chassis and pod, so there we go!
Not completely done though: still need to do some cosmetics, particularly the wheel inserts. I will be turning down the original wheels as inserts as they look good. So with that in mind, this is what the car now looks like:
While not a perfect fit (the wheelbase is slightly longer), the chassis fit well enough to my mind. It needed a fair bit of trimming and fettling to allow the body to sit low enough and have some float but all in all it worked OK.
I will be taking it to the track this evening. As always: I like "putting my money where my mouth is" and predict what kind of lap time I should be able to get with a totally new, built from the ground up car. For lap time perspective: the following are similar cars:
* Thunderslot T70 Spyder: 6.382 sec
* Thunderslot T70 Mk III Coupe: 6.548
* R-M Surtees Lola: "improved" original chassis: 6.782
* R-M Gurney Lola with Slot.it HRS2 chassis, prepared for proxy w NSR Supergrips: 6.380
I think I should be aiming for a 6.55 second lap. WIll report back tomorrow.
