Ninco Jag XK120 Revamp

Postby Ember » Tue Mar 05, 2013 3:10 am

Ok, it's a little bit more than a repaint, but a whole lot less than a scratch build.

Well... The project itself is a much loved and much raced Ninco XK120. My first non-mag car and an eternal favourite. Very much in need of some TLC. So... Off the track it came. Some balsa, Tamiya putty filler and elbow grease on a warm summer evening sitting under the shade of a tree added spats or skirts to it.

Rear drive train has been changed to Slot.it with BWA 15" skinny wheels and Paul Gage tyres to suit. The power plant has been upgraded from an NC1 to a Ninco NC2.

Over the last couple of days she's moved into the paint shop. Hopefully she'll be the last rattle can job to come out of the workshop as my airbrush and I have made a commitment to get to know each other better.

So.... She's now had her colour coats.

Paint details: Tamiya colours. The silver is Mica Silver and the grey Light Gun Metal.

On this one I think it is going to need quite a few coats of clear to get the depth of finish I want.

Stunning, Ember. I'm a sucker for Jags. My Dad got me hooked on them. He had a couple of 120 coupes and a 150. I drove a Mark II in high school and graduated to a Mark VII in University. Then came the 4.2 litre E-type. All lovely cars. Your subtle two tone is gorgeous.

Absolutely fantastic! I'm thinking my Ninco 120 may need a "freshening" after seeing this! What do you use for masking? Keep the updates coming!

Peter, I'd dearly love a real XK120. Look at those curves, they're luscious. In fact, I think I'd pick an XK120 over an XK-E. I know the E type is a truly iconic vehicle, but the 120 has a restrained elegance.

Masking was done with Tamiya tape. The 6mm was used for the outline. And filled with the 10mm. Not quite as accurate as I'd like, but practice makes perfect. I've got some conformable airbrush mask on the way. Might work better for really complex curves.

One of our HRW guys has one. There's a guy here in Richmond with two, and one of them was raced years ago. That's the one I want to see. I got a long look and explore on the other one when I bought an old BMW motorcycle from him. That's when he told me about the old racer.

Ember, that Jag is lovely. I tried that kind of two-tone once, and I got the contrast too low, so in most pictures it looks like the color is the same all over. You did much better! The car I'm talking about is on the "Marauder" topic, an old photo from years ago.

Actually, the colour scheme on yours is more like what I originally envisaged, but I didn't want to wait for the paint to turn up. The colours chosen were some cans that I had on hand, and I was lucky enough that the Gun Metal wasn't too dark.

Don't look at me Dave. I gave up years ago. :)

It's looking even better with a couple of coats of clear on it. But, I'm going to need another can or two, I think.

Ember, great looking finish on the best looking Jag ever. Looking forward to seeing it finished. I have a resin repop of this Ninco Jag on the way from New Zealand. Regards, John

Well.... The Jag is looking nice and shiny with 4 coats of clear on it. So, if 4 look good 5 will look better, right?

So.... Working today on the driver. Some plastic surgery on Mr Blobby. Extreme liposuction and a head transplant.

Just checked the clear coat on the body. Got to say... It's looking rather shiny. The owner definitely uses Meguiars Wet Look.
