Porsche 919 Breaks Nurburgring Lap Record

Simply phenomenal.

Porsche has been making a sort of 'Victory Tour' of some of the world's renowned race tracks with the 919 and setting lap records wherever they go. Unrestrained by Le Mans regulations the Porsche engineers unleashed even more power while not compromising handling. Acceleration, braking and handling are incredible. The skills of a driver capable of handling this car are enviable.

The driver was Timo Bernhard, 5 time winner of the 24 hrs of Nurburgring and 2 time Le Mans winner. The record was broken by over 51 seconds.

I am a bit of a speed freak but I must admit: that actually scared me! I thought 265km/h on a motorcycle was fast, but this is a different world. Continuous twists and turns, speed going up to >360km/h and rarely dropping below 200km/h, zero runoff areas, hard barriers and trees all over.... WOW! That was incredibly well done.

I use my driving simulator set-up to keep my burning desire to drive fast without endangering anyone. Sony PS3, GT feedback wheel, 40" Sony LED TV, Need For Speed 2 and my ex-John Buffum OMP Audi urquattro race seat. Whole setup works well, the 'ring is a whole different beast to master. So. Many. Turns. Love to swap out cars, even old school 911RSR or 914-6 GT is fun! My favorite so far is the Audi R8 LMS. I wish the simulator had a moment of polar inertia and force feedback in that realm. Anywho, cool stuff, good for winter and nights. For non-digital, tarmac I use my 2006 MINI Cooper S R53 JCW for autocrossing duties to keep my skills sharp. In the winter, the Audi quattro Avant gets painting duties in the snow. Never drive fast on the road, keep it on the track.

For sure an amazing feast...it seems that the car is stuck to the ground by large magnets!
I looked another video and this Porsche 919 is the Evo version: no rules applies.
One of the things that they did was to add side skirts to increase the downforce...talking about large magnets! ;-)
