Some Sportsman Motivation

I loved the Mercury Cougar from the time it was released in '67 as Mercury's muscle car based on the Mustang platform. The first car I purchased was a '69 Cougar and I still love the style. I never saw one used as a Saturday Night special even though I attended hundreds of short track races back then and still do.

It make take a few minutes to actually see the car in this photo, but this paint scheme would look great with big numbers on the doors and minimal other decals - maybe just one main sponsor above the rear tires and a few contingency sponsor decals behind the front tires.


I haven't had time to start working on a Summer Slam sportman car this year as I prepare to retire. But, when am able to join in if I can't get my hands on a '36 Chevy body to build a replica dirt modified, I think I'll try doing a '67 Cougar using an RMS resins or Scalextric body.

Yep, padirt, Southside Speedway is about 4 minutes from my driveway. Cars on trailers go by the front of my property every summer. When we first bought this place, we could hear the engines faintly in the distance sometimes. Yuppie twerps have built up the area so much it never happens anymore. I'm told Denny was sure to have been racing there when I went, but I didn't know. One time when I was there, we had a freak snow flurry. In the South, snow on an asphalt oval track is just weird. It wasn't cold enough to stick and all was well, just a lot of laughing in the bleachers at how weird it was.

That was pretty cool little track, I actually fished in a pond in the woods by the parking lot. I'm shocked it might close. I guess no race track is exempt from the sprawl these days.
