Advice Needed on Paint to Roll Onto Carrera Track

Postby crossovercrazy » Wed Oct 17, 2018 11:42 pm

Friends,

I want to roll a flat white paint surface onto a portion of my Carrera track (I don't want to disassemble my layout to spray it, nor spray it inside), to simulate the concrete runways at Sebring. I was wondering what kind of paint you all think would be best to roll onto the track surface, to stick to the plastic and give a relatively durable, flat white surface. If you can tell me the plastic itself used by Carrera (ABS?), and a technique to paint the inside of the slot white as well without clogging it (I know, a little anal-retentive with the simulation), then that would be a bonus for me.

I have a 4 lane Carrera plastic layout - I cleaned it with Acetone - let it dry - then taped off the slot and rails with masking tape. I then used Krylon Primer - let that dry, then I went further and utilized a stone effect paint to simulate weathered asphalt.

I did not have any crazing, warping, or other issues. Carrera track is pretty durable, though I do not know the composition of the plastic.

Mine is mounted in a trailer - and has been doing fine for several months - even in 112 deg heat.

My painted track has been going strong for 4 yrs now without issues. I used Behr primer tinted to the color I wanted. I just used windex to wipe the track before rolling the paint on. Just tape the rails.

Thin the paint to the consistency of milk, or just a tiny bit thicker.

Thanks everybody for your feedback - would love to hear from anyone else on their experience, too (as well as if anyone has been bold enough to paint inside the slot - I have 1/8" masking tape to tape each rail and paint the track slice inside the rails, but the foam roller probably won't get inside the slot, and I don't know if it is worth trying (using white to simulate concrete makes it stand out more)).

I used satin grey wall paint....nothing special. put it on with a brush and wiped the rails with a damp cloth after. did no prep. this track has seen lots of racing and the paint has been on for 6 to 8 years, no peeling no real signs of wear. cleaned every week with windex.

Racer 1H,

I would really like your track if you took more time to better landscape it...

Can you reach the whole track by hand to windex and wipe it without harming your landscaping, or do you drag a rag around with a car?

I have a few spots that cannot be reached by hand so I just use one of those kitchen type handles (Home Depot) that use the terry cloth covers and spray with Windex and run that around the track.

I used Rust-Oleum grey primer. Worked great, has lasted for years.

Here's my tip:
Don't spray in a closed garage. Been at it for awhile and painted one length of straight, went to remove the tape and found I forgot to tape! Don't spray in a closed garage.
