BMW M1 Gr. 5 - hybrid chassis

Got a hybrid chassis build going on for a Sideways BMW M1 Gr. 5 body, a visiting gift from Bob at the sadly defunct Victory Lap Hobbies.









Body's mocked but way too low for even me.

Too late as an entry for the upcoming North American Gr. 5 Proxy but I'll have a whole winter to fine tune for the next series.

That is a good looking chassis, nice work!

Added some flexi .032" brass side pans and tuning lead.





Noticeably improved handling and driveability.

@ arroldn - I'm sure F1Fan, the organizer, would have to clear this first, but I'm fine being on the sidelines for this upcoming edition. I'd like to learn more about prepping NSR rubber tires anyways.

In the meantime, the body's mounted. Worked out nicely with the sidepans flush with the sills...



...and having a good stance.



My rear track was as narrow as I could get and didn't allow the wheels/tires to be tucked within the body. Then I remembered chrisguyw's trick of modifying the Slot It sidewinder motor pod by replacing the spherical bushings and holders with Parma oilites. That would give me the extra narrowing millimeters.





Worked a treat with the wheels/tires easily tucked in now. Thanks Chris.

Got some modeling details done. Only got the body, so wheel inserts and a rear spoiler were needed.

Made wheel inserts from Slot Its with the centres replaced with resin cast ones. Think they're actually from a truck but I like the look. Found a NSR Mosler rear wing with a Dunlop marking that'll work.



Paint detailed the rims and wing.







Looks good to me.

Runs really well too so we're good on all fronts.

Those were just set up rims/tires.

Replaced the uglies with new PGs for a noticeable performance improvement.

That looks great Dan! Will you be bringing it to Luf's on Friday? If so I will also bring a Gp 5 proxy build M1 for some comparative running. And is that a Scaleauto red can motor? If so: LOTS of horsepower there!

Continuing the improvement of previous builds.

Made two changes. Went from a single rear body post to two single ones attached to each chassis side pan.



Placed motor pod urethane washers between the chassis and pod and locked attachment screws with nyloc nuts for minute adjustments.





Side body screws and rear motor mount nylocs were set loose and got some big improvements.

Fastest lap went from 5.814 seconds to 5.614. Two tenths is a big change. The car is quieter too, no doubt the use of urethane washers for body and motor mounts were the reasons.

Nice to see it perform as originally hoped for.

As the Gr5 proxy comes to an end for the last time you may need to find a GT3 body that's fits for the next proxy...
