I have never had a problem with JL/AW gears themselves, the real problem is that the cluster gear shaft is a little too short. Often the cars are assembled so that the lower end of the cluster gear shaft does not fit into the hole in the base chassis and the whole works is tilted resulting in a poor gear mesh. The fix is simple enough, first press the cluster gear shaft further into the driven gear, then press the drive pinion up a bit. Now the lower end of the cluster gear shaft will fit in the chassis and the gear mesh will be greatly improved.

Ok, so much for my 1st attempt. Working on the chassis I ended up taking a side path and installed a "bushing" (really brass tube) at the cluster shaft. And also was fed up with the wobble gears that came with this gear plate. So I installed some left over TJet brass gears for the idler and upper and lower cluster gear. And while this gear plate runs (mostly) smooth and fast, not it is not legal for this race. It is a good thing I have more parts...

Sometimes the cluster gear shaft hole in the gear plate is too large, it is easy to close that up. The rear axle holes are often too large as well and also need to be closed up. Take a look at this: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sLokTZ ... sp=sharing

And I just made a chassis I was working on illegal. I was cleaning some "boogers" off the floor of the magnet pockets to allow the magnets to sit properly. Whoops... At least I found a gear plate that turns freely without binding. Time to put the good gear plate on the good chassis!
And a question, which crown gear can we use? 15 tooth or the Ultra G 19 (?) tooth gear?
