Scalextric Jaguar XKR GT3 rear wheels

Postby NHBandit » Mon Oct 29, 2018 6:09 pm

More newbie questions. I just purchased a small lot of cars that need work to tinker with. I am in need of at least 1 rear wheel for a Scalextric Jaguar XKR GT3 and a pair of tires. Tried to locate a complete rear axle assembly and nobody seems to have one. Not finding a whole lot of info on replacing Scalextric wheels either. Help...

Not sure about the size, but several options are available for aftermarket wheels. You can either get a matching set of 4, live with unmatched wheels (several of my cars don't care), or get insert wheels and use the old wheels to make a mold for resin casting.
Personally, I would put aftermarket wheels on since they will be reasonably true and thus smoother running.

Update. After doing some swapping around I found that the rear axle assembly from my Scalextric Ford GT fit perfectly so I ordered one. Been doing a bit of reading and it appears that the plastic Scalextric wheels are simply a bitch to find and most aftermarket wheels don't just pop on because of the knurled axles. is this correct ? Anyway I'm good for now. Being an old junkyard dog I could care less that the style of wheels don't match..

Finding OEM replacement parts for 1/32nd slot cars with plastic wheels can be difficult. One option is to use aftermarket wheels, but those will not fit over the stock Scalextric knurled axles. You would have to replace the entire rear axle assembly, including the axle, gear, wheels and tires. Another possibility is to measure the diameter of the knurled portion of the axle and buy the correct reamer to enlarge the holes in the aftermarket wheels. I don't recommend trying to drill out the wheels. If you use aftermarket wheels you would probably have to buy tires to fit.

Glad you made it work.

If and when? Never ream a good quality aftermarket aluminum wheel to fit over a stock knurled axle.
My opinion it is a waste of a good wheel. Use 1000 grit sandpaper and with the car running, hold the paper over the knurled end and sand the higher edges down until the wheel fits.

And this is just a quick fix until you can get the parts to rebuild the car completely.

Axles are cheap. If you decide to go with aftermarket wheels and gears a good axle won't break the bank.

It will cost you $21-$23 to replace the wheels, tires, axle and gear. Reaming out the wheels is only a good option if you do not expect to ever upgrade to a better gear. Once you ream out the wheels they can't be used on a standard axle. I race my cars and I replace all of that stuff, however a person that is a casual runner may not want to spend $21 to get a $40-$50 car running.

The most expensive part of the up grade is the wheels. Insert wheels are at least $8.99, an axle is $3.99 for 2 and a gear is 6.99 bushings are $3.99. Make the investment on one of your cars and you will probably do it on far more cars. I would also add a new pinion at $3.99.

Yeah spending 20 bucks to fix a $40 car makes zero sense. I found that a rear axle assembly with wheels and tires for a Ford GT40 fit perfectly and i could care less that the style of wheels is different. I'm into these cars cheap. Paid a little over $50 for 7 cars and like to keep the cost reasonable. I'm way ahead so far since 4 of them need nothing. Thanks for the help guys.
