Where do you source the STL models of the figures if you don't mind me asking?

All over the place. I find them mostly on Thingiverse, and the most prolific is Fredini, who created and set up a 3d scanner for people for a project he was doing to model a period Coney Island. Here's his collection of people:

Cool, thanks! I am a member at GrabCAD and Thingverse but had not seen those figures.

Thingverse also has a bunch of items like vintage vending machines, garage tools, shop stuff, motors, engine stands, etc!

Batch #3 all done the other night: 0.06 resolution and no supports. Took about 29 hours for 12. I have to say, I'm very pleased with the quality of these!

Hi David,

That is a great crowd of spectators
Have you played with slicing up the original models and swapping bodies onto sitting positions?

How much better would you rate printing at 0.06 than 0.1?

Cheers

Nimrod - It makes a pretty big difference in my opinion. I'm happy with the .1 versions I did, but the .06 look even better!

I just did a vintage soda and candy vending machine. Look pretty cool and period correct.

David. My Ender 3 will be here Wednesday! I ordered a spool of the PLA also. After asking the PC people in my family if they would help me, I pulled the trigger on one. This will be a heck of a learning experience for me, as I know little to nothing about 3d printing. I have been cramming on the net for info, and have went to sources mentioned on this thread. I am afraid I will have way more questions than answers to begin with!
My ultimate goal, is to build lifelike driver figures, and of course spectators, and accessories.
Still trying to wrap my head around the whole scaling thing? But maybe the instructions will have all that info.
Looking forward to trying it anyway.

Thanks a lot David! You may be getting that call! I will try to figure it all out first though, and use you only as a lifeline! lol.
Are you able to re position people yet? or is that even possible?

I have not played with modifying figures at all since that takes a different skillset. I'm happy at this second piddling with the figures and items available.

So, in playing with figures printed at 1.0 vs. 0.06 a few things come to mind:

1) is the extra time (hours in some cases) worth the resolution refinement?
2) how do the 1.0 figures really look once painted?

Well, I primed the lot of the figures done at 1.0. I used Duplicolor Heavy Duty Primer/Filler. Did a pretty good job coating and covering the light lines - if you look at them VERY closely, you'll see them. Two medium coats and that's what you see here:

Image

I spent ONLY 5 minutes painting one of these - literally, my normal paint job and a quick wash. No facial detail as I don't like painting their eyes...always seems out of scale/zombie apocalypse-like to me...here it is with 3 of my Rev/Mono repaints in the same painting style:

Image

Sure, you zoom into 100x magnification and it looks pretty...meh.

But stand back 12"...

A few notes: my painting style is organic. I like things slightly textured. the slicker a figure is, the more toy-like it looks in my eyes, on my layout. Your mileage may vary. I typically do a quick wash to highlight folds in clothes, etc. Not much more time is spent on them and I've gotten major compliments on them thus far.

So, the REAL question is: do I really need to print at .060 to get the results I need, or can I speed things up with 1.0?

Talk among yourselves!
