Printed racer challenge!

Postby btaylor » Fri Dec 28, 2018 12:14 pm

I have a challenge for all you 3D printing guy's. I found this file, and purchased it. I need to convert it to an STL. then I will be sharing it. The challenge is to print this car, make it runnable, and lets have a race with them!
I am adding some pictures of the car printed now, and will post the file tonight when I get it converted. The driver figure is not included in the file, so we would have to supply them ourselves.
I think it would be fun to have a race with these! we could pass them around to anyone who wanted to run them, and see how well they hold up. Looks like they would be a cheap build too, if we stay with low motor power. anyway, here is the car im using! and it is 1/32 by the way.

Yea, I figured its time we put our new found skills to a test! Printing people is cool, but a 3D race would be a blast. If they break, we are only out a few feet of weedeater string!

Challenge accepted.

I have been thinking about something like this....printed chassis, pod, guide, wheels, body....with a 14-16k motor.....sounded like an interesting proxy. Lots of interesting bodies out there.....

MT-1 motor for these?

You mean something like these or would I have to detune them.

This is just a standard 31 Ford Vickie with a 4.6 DOHC modeled in with an interior and uses the piranha sidewider with the wide meats to harness that power.
Image
This is my 32 Ford Model A where I got a little carried away by adding some Indy downforce but still modeled up a 4.6 DOHC under the hood and the same sidewinder setup as the Vickie with the same big meats. I could blame the Boss here at HRW for he was the one that got me started in utilizing those wheels and tires, but I won't for his mention of these tires has really added fun in these cars when not using magnets.

That '32 looks really hot minus the aero. Have you printed one?

When you guys 3D print a car like this, including the wheels, what axle size are you using? And, do the wheels reliably press onto a standard make of axle and stay put? Are the wheels designed to fit with an existing make and model of tire, or are tires cast to fit the wheels?

This is great!!! I'm in
Can we get a parts list for the non-printed parts?
Maybe, can one of the retail sponsors put a kit together for us?

Bob, let us know our share for the kit or do we buy it out right as well?

Cheers

Regarding wheels:

These will be interesting.
I have printed 15x8 and 17x10 wheels and they are frighteningly true. It's pretty amazing, actually. I run a Fly 512S on a printed chassis with printed 17x10 wheels and it's very smooth and quick. And I did zero truing on the wheels - off the printer and on the axle and run it.

Having said that.....PLA is not terribly flexible when solid. I use 3/32 piano wire for axles, and print the wheels with a 2.4 mm hole. A 2.38mm hole requires drilling to get the axle in (hand twisting a 3/32 bit). I will try a 2.39mm hole and see what happens. Generally I roughen the end of the axle and use a drop of CA.

So I can't reliably get good press on wheels yet...and I haven't tried making a set screw hole (although that is on my design list). I might have to experiment with slicer settings, and try to make the hub less solid......maybe some of the other guys have been more successful with press on wheels?

Guy's, I am having trouble with the file conversion. It came out so far out of scale it wont fit the plate size! I am looking into it today with help. Hopefully i will have the file for this car to share.
I may get some input from the more knowledgeable folks on here.

Bob, You might have the the slicer program set to inches where the model you are bringing in is set to millimeters. You may have to convert it in another program like Nettfab, Blender, if you can't get it to go in otherwise. I noticed yesterday the new CURA for Lulzbot won't take a one of these files until it is converted.

I got the file converted, then tried a print. It was so far off that the chassis file would not fit the ender 3 plate. I kept resizing the chassis till i got it the scale of the orginal file. Had to set it at.85 to make everything work. I am sure there is a simpler way, but i am not that savy yet. Right now i am printing one piece at a time to check fitment. I hope to be able to share the final stl. Files for this car.

Cool idea Bob! What are you using for wheels and tires for this kit?
