Thanks Guy's,

The P68 was and still is a big file, with a very fine mesh surface to get those smooth curves.
It looks great, imagine a 1:24 version flying around the track running against BRM Porsche 917's.

Pete, I prefer to print my models standing on end (Vertically), it minimizes the stepping (0.05mm) and gives me a very nice finish.
Usually I make a cut approx 10mm from either the rear or the front, or wherever it will be seen the least.
This gives me a flat surface to base the model and adhesion to the heated bed works great. You can breakup the model even more if you like.
If I leave supports on an uncut model , the supports make leave a messy face, too much to clean and fix.

As for the TOJ, I'll need a little more info and which specific one your after.
If I can't find a model out there to convert, I'm sure we can tweek and existing similar looking body to cater to your needs.

Please keep posting your 3D models as far as I know, this is the only forum embracing 3D printing so easily.

Cheers

Hi HwpSlotcars,

I mostly source free 3D models where possible.
Depending on the file type, it may be something like .RYF, .FFR or whatever, I'll then go through the process of finding a way to translate it to something I can work with STL, OBJ, SKP, 3DS, etc.
Once translated, I clean up the model till generally a shell is left, again I may go through any of the following or a combination of them (3ds Max, Sketchup, Blender, NetFABB and a couple of others) to get exactly what I need including any adjustments or additional details etc.
A lot of it is repair work too.
My final stage is to send the model to an online bureau which I pay a small fee for so many models per month, that does a final fix and cleanup of anything i miss.
I then test the model, sometimes, even then the model is unusable or still won't print properly.
The whole process can anywhere form a couple of hours to a couple of days.

My hats off to C G Slotcars for the great work they have done by creating so many slot products available.
The prices they charge in noway mirror they time and effort they put into each product, a true love for the hobby.
The chassis for the Shadow alone is a work of art and certainly wish them along and successful business as they really do deserve it.

I'm a hack in comparison but just want to have access to as many different cars as possible.
I also enjoy building up a model from bits and put my own personal touches to it.
Don't get me wrong, I've been eyeing those cars out for a while and some may just end up on my shelves eventually.

Many, Many years ago, we all lived through times when an obscure but desirable resin car was made and it was then only issued in a limited release, why?
I love this hobby and wish we could all have any slot car we want, thankfully, this is fast becoming a reality.

Sorry for the rant, but I don't want to be seen as stepping on toes.

Cheers

I think odds are some of us are interested in similar groups of cars in different eras. And a bunch of us like to build so, it is expected that folks with interest in this technology as well, are inclined to embrace creating what they/we want, there are apt to be various builds of the same cars that inspire here that we all saw in 1:1 beasts. You guys are filling out this hobby/passion for sure.

No worries
I know there's a segment of people that want to do it on their own - and the technology is easily accessible for some people.
There is a long way between this stuff and what I do.

I was the first one to sell chassis on Shapeways - I would have stopped everything a long time ago if I took offense to people trying to do the same thing...

Thank you for taking the time to say something.....

These little cars do take a lot of effort. My approach is to take three views, front, top and side and place them in separate views in the model I'm working on in Inventor. Then, from those three views I start modeling up half a body by extruding and carving similar to a carving a block of wood. It might be easier to use surfaces but I've never learned how to use surfaces. With all these actions being done, it does take some time to complete. This makes it somewhat easier for me to download a model from the internet and then clean it up to print. This brings up another question, where are these Can-Am Models, I would like to add these to my small collection.

And before folks get too excited, remember that most of the successful prints so far are roadsters or open cars.....coupes are tough. Glass isn't yet printable, and a uniform thickness of pillars and roof is a challenge.

As NimROD has described, supports create a rough inner surface complicating window installation. A Dremel helps but it's not a panacea. That McLaren Mk6GT is wonderful but the inner roof is a mess unless you slice the nose and print it nose down. And the you have to glue it together so you lose the integrity of a single piece body.

Until we can print clear windows, compromises remain. Don't get me wrong....I will accept black window bodies for cars I can't otherwise get. I love having those cars. They aren't going to win serious races, but having them to run at home is still a huge win in my book.

Hi All,

When building a model from scratch I'd take the same approach as CCobra described, pic of the Front, Rear and a or both side views.
Initially i used (AutoCAD, 3D Studio Max, Maya, Zmodeller and Rhyno) to work with setting out the main lines then filling the areas with a mesh, this was my method for many many years building up models of cars, robots stuff.
Over the last few years and moving to 3D printing, I've included Sketchup & Blender and using them more and more. I know Sketchup a little more than Blender and utilize plugins to help with the contouring at times.
Yes it definitely is a lot more time consuming working from scatch, but a great feeling once the models out and looking great.
I've done a few 40K & Dust Tactics models as well as the Cars.

To CCobra and anyone else wanting files, drop me a PM and I'll email the cleaned up STL files.

If your hunting for the original files, look no further than Car Racing Games & Sims, but expect some work to get them to clean STL's.
So far the models I've cleaned up are printing well, I want to keep the quality as high as possible.
Constructive comments are always appreciated.

Cheers
