I added a simple interior to the press box and detail (antennas etc) to the roof. The roof details are all just scraps of styrene & foam core, with a couple plastic shelf leg "plugs" used as drum antennas. Still need to add figures.

I finally got some of the figures I painted seated into the grandstands in the Le Mans ESSO Press Complex. I also added more signs, including the 4x white "ESSO" on the front. For that lettering I had a guy I found on ebay custom cut the lettering from vinyl. Cost was less than $10 for the four signs. Also notice how the interior looks with a few figures placed inside. Even though it is very "spartan" it still kind of makes it look busy in there.

A quick, cheap detail I added to the layout tonight. The grandstands seemed a little "sterile" so I made some trash barrels w/sponsors logos. These are simply paper, rolled around a brush handle & glued with a glue stick. I "aged" them a bit with chalk. They don't have bottoms but that won't show once I add a bit of scale "trash". Questions?

​​​​​​​I was able to get the ESSO Press Tower lighted tonight. I still need to add a few more lights (on the stairs & I want a spotlight on the rooftop "ESSO" sign) but it's getting closer.

When I order unpainted figures in bulk I get a LOT of duplicates. One way to sort of make them more interesting is to add "accessories", such as I did here with the flags. The next batch I do will be with manufacturer flags (Porsche/Ferrari/Ford etc).

It is hard to wrap my head around the level of skill and talent required to accomplish something like this! Would love to see a current overview pic of the layout! Also saw in the comments about your Route 66 track....Any pics and/or price on this?

I added more lights to the press complex. You can buy 50 5mm LEDs off ebay for about $5. I don't really enjoy doing the lighting but this layout really needs them.

Before I build a new structure for any layout I will often make a crude cardboard mock-up to test my sight lines to be sure that the track is not overly obscured. Here is a crude grandstand shape I built tonight to see if this size & location is going to work OK.

The detail on the grand stand and press box is more than amazing and I do have a question. On some of the photos that have the most detail would it be OK to make them a bit bigger please?

Now that I know the amount of space I need to fill (32" x 9"), I'm starting on scratch building 2 sets of grandstands. I started by cutting risers out of .060 Evergreen Styrene. I buy it in 12" x 24" sheets. The great thing about styrene is that you do not have to cut all the way through, simply score it with a utility knife & it snaps clean.
