Monogram Cobra Daytona Coupe replacement wheels/tires

Hello. I'm rebuilding my old Monogram Ford Shelby Coupe. I need to replace the wheels using CB Designed or other brands. Can anyone advise me on the correct wheel size/ part number? Thanks. Rob Perry.

How wide are the original wheels? If there is enough space you might be able to use wider wheels in the back. What size axles does your car have? Vintage axles are usually threaded and I expect that they are 1/8th inches in diameter. Modern slot cars use 3/32nd axles and the wheels are made to fit those. Modern aftermarket wheels use set screws, you may end up having to replace the axles, axle bearings, wheels, tires and crown gear. 15X8 mm insert wheels (CBD1050) would probably fit on the front and back. There may be space for 15X10 mm wheels (CBD1100) in the back. Rubber, silicone and urethane tires are available to fit the wheels.

Being as the Monogram wheels are oversize to start with, are you wanting to replace yours with the same size in alloy or wanting to replace them with scale size wheels? To have a similar look to yours you would need Slot.it 16.5x8 wheels or similar. And as RichD states new axles etc as well.

Hi Rob, If you want the car to look authentic, you can get wheels and the proper inserts from RSSlotracing.

RSSlot makes (and has done for several years) wheels identical to the BWA wheels which are no longer available. They are very well made, and have some bead detail on the wheel rim which makes them look really nice........our local area clubs use a ton of these. They also make a line of inserts which are a perfect fit, and they do have a Halibrand insert which is/was taken from the original Monogram Daytona coupe.

You will have to do a little work, or spend a little money however, to do the swap for the originals......1/ you could file/sand the knurls on the original axles to accept the new wheels,......I advise strongly against this !!,....or, 2/ you will need to replace the rear axle, and possibly the crown gear and bushings with some 3/32 double flanged bushings.

You also can use wheels from anyone you like, (CB design,Slot-it etc,...they are all great ), and turn down the original wheels to use the inserts, but you will lose the look of the RSwheels.
Any wheel with an exposed boss coupled with a tread surface width of 8mm or more will be a very tight fit, and will be well over scale width.

Attached are a couple of shots of a "Daytona" that I built a few years back for our local club's 60"s sports car class......it uses the RSSlot wheels and inserts.

The bead detail on the wheel, adds to the realism



I have used 7mm wide rear wheels, with 9mm width rear tires.......club rules, but a very scale width for the 60's cars



The 9mm wide rear tires look perfect.



The part numbers are as follows....

Wheels..RSW002..(15 x 7mm wheel)
RSW003..(15 x 9mm wheel
inserts...RS1525...(Halibrand with knockoff)

Hi Rich!! The stock wheel is 16mm tall by 7mm wide but there's ample room for a wider wheel tread @10mm. Thanks :)

16.5 X 7 (CBD1225) would be the closest CB Design wheel. You could use a slightly wider tire on those or go to 17 X 8 wheels (CBD1250) or even 17 X 10 wheels (CBD1300).
