After yesterday's race (part 2) the infield of Shelby-Hendrix Speedway was opened to the public for a vintage car show. Missing from the event was the #6 Down Undathunda Javelin which was in its pit stall with the ignition system being replaced. Telemetry showed, while it was usually running competitive laps, occasionally it would be up to 2 seconds off the pace. During the quick warm up session this morning the #6 Javelin seemed to be much more consistent. With the previously problematic Down Undathuda Javelin starting on the pole, this could be a problem for the rest of the field.
If there are ties for total points after this race the tie breakers will be 1) number of wins, and 2) finishing position in today's race.
Close racing and hard fought battles once again defined this SIP race. The first position change was on lap 1 when the Slothead Racing #1 Javelin got by the Oregon Donors Javelin for 6th place. On lap 4 the #15 Racing Bandit Camaro and the #28 Dave's Dollies Mustang passed the #11 Camaro of Thunda Downunda to claim 3rd & 4th places. The #11 Camaro was now in 5th, surrounded by the point contending #28 Mustang and #1 and #2 Javelins. But the Thunda Downunda Camaro clung to 5th place, and behind it Oregon Donors' Javelin got back by Slothead Racing's Javelin. Any thought the Javelins would work together to freight train to the front was now put to rest.
The biggest moves of the race started on lap 17 when the #17 CAT Racing Mustang passed the improved #6 TC Lug Nuts Javelin and took over the lead. At the same time the #2 Oregon Donors' Javelin found its way around the #11 Thunda Downunda Camaro for 5th place. A lap later Slothead Racing's #1 Javelin also got by the Thunda Downunda #11 Camaro and began to heat up Oregon Donor's rear bumper. The intense pressure paid off on lap 23 when the Thunda Downunda #11 Camaro faltered allowing both the #1 Slothead Racing Javelin and the #11 Thunda Downunda Camaro to get by.
The #17 CAT Racing Mustang scored an unexpected win, and battles further back in the field had huge points implications.
