SCX Plymouth Barracuda - re-chassis

Picked up an SCX Plymouth Barracuda body from a local racer. Was a failed scratchbuild attempt with the body hacked and covered with glue smudges all around including the windscreen. No matter, it's still one of the better Barracuda/Challenger bodies done in the recent past and going to raced.

Curious on how it'll run with a sidewinder chassis layout and FF050 slimline motor.

So, gathered:

Chassis materials, cut and shaped them to size...

- .055" piano wire for main rails and front axle uprights
- .064" brass strip for guide tongue and cross members
- .032" brass strip for side pans
- 5/32" brass tube for guide post
- 1/8" brass tube for front axle holder

...other parts
- 3D printed sidewinder FF050 motor pod
- Scalextric Sport FF050 motor, 25K, green
- Sloting Plus Universal guide, 7mm deep



Set up worked well on my Ferrari 312P Coupe build so giving this a try.

The motor pod was designed and printed by Greater Vancouver Slot Car Club's 3DRon, the resident 3D whiz.



Ferrari 312P Coupe build


It's a work in progress having gone through a few iterations and there's further changes to go.

I rather like the FF050 motors, so having this pod for a sidewinder application is a big plus.

Chassis's assembled and running.









Motor's geared at 3.3:1 with a Slot It 11t, 6.5mm pinion and 36t, 19mm spur. Rolling on Slot It 15 x 8 rims with Slot It rubber at the front and PG urethanes out back. Think they're the tall 20085.

Runs really well but we'll see after mounting the body.

Mocked the body on and shooting for this stance.

All done.

Mounted the body with single posts at the front and rear, installed resin Minilite wheel inserts and taped in the previous owner's simplified flat card interior/driver tray.



Took a bit of inner rear wheel arch grinding and tire re-profiling but got them tucked in with no rubbing.







Usually install chassis side pans for additional weight but car runs fine as is, weighing in at 88 grams.

Ran a comparison with my modified SCX Barracuda (stock plastic chassis, Slot It boxer 25K motor, Slot It gears, TSRF guide, 98 grams) and the new build comes ahead on my twisty short wood track, topping out at a fastest 5.856 second lap compared to 5.972 seconds.

Good outcome on all fronts.

Too curious to let alone, so added .032" flexi chassis side pans for body mounts, removing the single rear.









Couldn't run a faster fastest lap at 5.930 but can run more consistent fast laps for a better median over a race.

All three body screws are set loose. Some adjusting of the motor pod screws may shave off a few one hundredths.

That is one car SCX should hit the shop shelves with when they pull finger and start making cars again, and yours looks nicer than nice.

I really like that. I can't help thinking it'd go better with an NSR shark, 20 or 22, tons of brakes and likes tall gearing.

Got a S can version of the same motor pod, so going to try that.



Coming to the conclusion that the FF050 slimcan motors are better suited to lighter cars weighing less than 70 grams. This build's a hefty 99 with the added side pans.
