Re: "Cool Tools" Sticky??

Postby LibertyFLHTC » Sun Sep 23, 2012 7:20 am

The default definition file for Ultimate Racer 3.0 is not quite accurate so I have improved and added on to the definitions. These are not all inclusive - many pieces have been left out as the track library would be massive. For example I left out the banked track pieces - you can use the R1s in the design of your track and then simply put the banked pieces in - I also left out the Straight Track Pit In Right piece (4001PITR) as it is the same style track as the 4001SQQ (I called it the Straight To Single piece) and so on. Also - I named the pieces as I found it confusing to find them by their part numbers.

I rounded most of the numbers to the 3rd decimal place - in a few spots I went to the 6th or 7th decimal. The lane spacing on the narrow lanes track is further apart than actual - the program had a hard time deciding how to join the track pieces if the spacing was closer. There are probably other exceptions that I have forgotten about but they are there for a reason. But if something looks wrong let me know.

Some added/improved track pieces of note:
Power Passer Crossover
Fixed and Switching Lane Change pieces
Single Lane R1 (inside lane) from the Deegan Hevy Hitters Sets
Power Passer Pit Lane
15 and 30 degree R1 pieces and 15 degree R2 if you decide to cut some track
I also improved the spacing for the dashed lines on the pieces

It seems the easiest way to update the definitions file is to
open the C:/ drive
open Programs
find and open Racer30
open the Library folder
then open the ARTIN43 file with Notepad
and delete all the text in that file
Then copy and paste the below text into that file and save

If you want to keep the default file then copy and paste this into Notepad and save it to the Library directory of Ultimate Racer (under a different name than ARTIN43)

To easily remove the buck from a vac form a few home made tools are a great help. From some scrap PETG, cut 4 to 6 pieces ranging from 1/4" wide to 3/8" wide and all roughly 1-1/2" long.

Once the excess scrap is trimmed from the buck and all final trim work is done determine which end of the buck will be removed first. Ever so gently insert the strips between the PETG and the buck in the trouble areas of the design and slide them as far in as possible without causing damage. Once the PETG begins to seperate from the buck, gently pull on the buck while watching for more trouble areas needing assistance. Once all the trouble areas are released the buck should pop out.

Cars like the '63 Vette with the under wrap front and rear, the mildest under wrap end has to be removed first. Several strips will have to be used in the under wrap area to help the buck slide out of the PETG form. I've also used a pair of needle nose pliers to pull on the buck.

Note - if the bucks pops out quickly you will have the release strips scattered all over!

Gear Ratio vs. Tire Rollout

tire rollout per motor rev = tire circumference / gear ratio

The stock Artin gear ratio is 2.8:1.

The wide Artin tires measure .670" diameter (on the wheel) giving a circumference of 2.105".

2.105" / 2.8 = .751" rollout

I designed the existing wheels to match the Artin fat tires diameter. The slicks are stretched over the wheel.

I have re-designed the existing wheel to provide two variations of tire diameter. There is now available tire diameters of .640" and .610"

The .640" tire gives an effective gear ratio of 2.93:1 and the .610" tire gives an effective ratio of 3.08:1.

stock circumference / tire rollout = effective gear ratio

For a .610 diameter tire (.684 rollout):
2.105 / .684 = 3.08

Motor Current Data...

Postby LibertyFLHTC » Sun Sep 23, 2012 7:28 am

by Slotsquatch:

Listed below are some basic numbers on motor current draw as it pertains to some of the more popular motors found in box stock 1/43 slots, circa Oct. 2008.

The data was provided by Josh (JXR) in a recent post - thanks Josh!

SCX Compact car with standard Compact magnet at 12 volts draws:
500 - 550ma at full load (holding the back wheels still)
200 - 250ma at full acceleration
120 - 150ma once it's reached top speed

Carrera Go!!! car with standard Go!!! magnet at 12 volts:
600 - 650ma at full load
300 - 350ma at full accel.
150 - 200ma at top speed

Artin car with standard motor and standard full size magnet at 12volts:
3.5 - 4.0 amps at full load
1.0 - 1.25 amps at full accel.
700 - 800ma at top speed

Once again, thanks go out to Josh for providing this data image

Here's a definition file I made for the SCX Compact Track for Ultimate Racer 3.0 - (Update: the newest version of Ultimate Racer is out (.28) and the SCX Compact files are included with it!)

Once you have Ultimate Racer installed - download this zip file containing 4 EMF (vector graphics) files I created:
compactemf.zip
unzip them and put them in the Textures folder (don't change their names) - C:\Program Files\Racer30\Media\Textures

Then copy the text below and paste it into notepad (or similar text editor) and save as "SCX Compact.txt" in C:\Program Files\Racer30\Library
(or just download the text file SCX Compact.txt)

Here's a very handy item to use with timing / light systems. It makes pin checking and wire hook-up much easier.
Image

Another item that can be found available at electronic outlets is a relay board that will operate from the parallel port.
Just be certain it is "opti-coupled" to guard against port damage. Several variations can be found on eBay.

When fabbing bodies and chassis using CA (crazy glue) there is a method to hepl it set faster and be stronger. This works best with the liquid type CA.

While holding the pieces together to be bonded, place a small "bead" of CA at the joint. Continue to hold the pieces and quickly sprinkle a liberal amount of baking soda on the CA. The CA wil then setup immediately. Dump the excess soda back into the container. Leave the joint set for a few minutes to finish curing. Use a soft brush to remove the soda "dust". The CA / baking soda joint can then be sanded smooth.
