Retirement among the grapevines

Postby Ember » Sun May 12, 2013 2:50 am

Well. Sunday is Gaydon Slot Festival day. And with that comes the hand out of the souvenir programme. Thought I would share with you my little part of that programme.

I built this little diorama to house my 2012 SCX World Proxy car in its retirement. Since its completion, the car and diorama have been in residence at the Koonara Wines cellar door in Penola. This was actually the first of these 'out of the box' dioramas that I built, but was unable to show it until now.

It started off with a base of stained pine and 3mm MDF.

Contouring was added with some scraps of floristry foam.
Image

Mud applied which is a mixture of paint, joint compound and crushed rock.
Image

When dried I sponged the surface back to expose more of the rock.
Image

Static grass mix added with a puffer bottle, a very green blend for a change.
Image

Long grass and the frames for the vines.
Image

Then the vines themselves.
Image

And finally leaves, which are once again from a laser cut Kamazukuri paper kit.
Image

The finished product.

When I looked it over I realised there was something missing. Something small but important. Grapes. Thought a lot about it, but could not come up with an idea of how to produce them. Graham Lane came to my rescue. Poppy seeds! And they worked a treat.

Now... What shall I do for this year's WRP car when it retires. A publishing house?

Thank you for the very kind words folks.

I did this one never expecting to do another one. It was for a bit of fun, to see what I could do. I can't tell you how many hours I spent gluing leaves on the grapevines. But I've actually had someone express an interest in one for display. :o

Ember - that is too good for my feeble words to describe! Those are the best 1:32 scale grapes ever made!

However, after looking this over - here's what I want you to do:

Tell His Lordship that you are coming to Colorado and get on a plane. I've got a nice spare bedroom with a comfy bed, will happily stock the fridge with your favorite foods and drinks, and have a layout that simply needs your touch. I'm sure a few weeks would get it done.

Better not. Think of how many of us are in North America. Everybody would want to come watch her work, and David's house will slide down the mountain!

Do you work wearing geezer goggles? I needed them just to see the grapes.

What else can I say?

It looked fantastic without the "grapes," but wow. All I can do is shake my head. Unbelievable. You've transcended slot car scenery and what you do now resides in that category called art.

Sheesh! I definitely wouldn't have had the patience for all that, especially the leaves and grapes! Amazing work, Ember! :)
