Jury Duty Again Today

It makes 3 days now, and hopefully the last. First time for me and it's kind of interesting sometimes and boring a lot of the time. We're not allowed to discuss it outside jury room, so I can't go into any details at this time, maybe later today. :)

Ken, I waited forever to finally get called up and I did about 5 years ago. I'm one that found the process fascinating, the case ridiculous, and the other members of the jury competent. It was alot of fun. We even got a debrief by the prosecutor and defender afterwards. Kind of a rest of the story moment.

Anyway, I haven't had it since, but was glad I got to do it at least once.

I did federal jury duty in Memphis, and again here, and then county here. The Memphis trial was interesting, but here in Virginia, they always call me to show up, then find out about my education and send me home. Defense attorneys don't want people who may have legal knowledge. That's why lawyers and others who may know about what's going on get excluded from juries. That goes for people who may be only peripherally associated with the law, like me. My field is Church and State (First Amendment Studies and Theologies of World Religions), which seems unlikely to get in a defense attorney's way, but then they excluded everyone else with a grad degree of any kind too, on one of the county juries I went to.

I've received letters 3 times to show, but when I send back letters saying I'm hard of hearing, I get told not to bother showing up...
That's about the only time I'm glad to be hard of hearing... ;)

Well, be glad you are not on the Jodi Arias jury. They are into their fifth month. I
think the facination long wore off for these folks. They have my heartfelt respect.

The case ended with a guilty verdict. The defendant was on parole for the exact same offense and had only been out of prison for a month when this incident occured. He was charged with robbery with great bodily harm for the first count, and aggravated assault on the second count which carries a 30-50 year sentence. He got what he deserved. 24 years old and his life is basically over now.

He had a hobby, crime. He had been in trouble for a long time, it just escalated as he got older. When the verdict was read he acted like he didn't even care. Another young mans life ruined over less than 8 dollars. Sad. :(

I don't believe slot racing is the hobby for him. Maybe plastic model planes. And I certainly
would not want him next to me on the drivers stand if I happen to knock him out of the slot.
