Nothing like setting an alarm in the middle of the night to check status...
In the words of our fire folks: "Major objectives today in the Black Forest fire include protecting Woodmoor, an unincorporated community of about 3,000 homes in a heavily wooded area of about 2,000 acres east across Interstate 25 from Monument."
Uh, that's us. So, just a mile south of me they put those folks on Pre-evac, which means pack your stuff and be ready. The winds are expected to be to the west/northwest at 30-40 this afternoon. I don't need to spell this out obviously. It has not jumped highway 83 to the east, so that at least is very good news. I'm hearing blades somewhere nearby so the air cavalry is obviously getting to work early this morning.
Another friend was evacuated as they moved the lines north overnight and I've not heard from him since and don't know the status of their home. They are actually trying to keep this thing from jumping counties it has gotten that big.
I am scheduled to get my wife and daughter from the airport in Denver at 3:10 today and will do so with the packed vehicle. My son will be home with his packed vehicle and will bug out with the cat if we are put in evac status while I'm on the road. We will also have a neighbor in tow who's husband is travelling on business and she has no where to go. My sister is putting us up in Denver if it comes to that.
Here's to hoping they stop this monster and that they are all safe on the front lines.
More fun to come.
