Here's a sneak preview of first attempt at a Messerschmitt Tiger.Polycarbonate body shell by Patto, in Australia.



Home made chassis using RazorJon's wonderful jig.

Sadly, there isn't a plastic or resin kit for a Messerschmitt. Obviously, I've got a long way to go before these are fit to be seen in public; but I've got another two shells to practice on!

I don't know why, but I have one of these polycarb shells from Patto too. Might actually be able to do something with it some time in the future.

When I was a young boy in Mississippi, we saw a TV show from England that had one in it, and I loved it. I looked for years for a model kit, and finally tried to make one from an Me-109 kit. What a mess.

I think it was because the Allies wouldn't let them go on making aeroplanes,after the War.

There was a huge effort to get people working and earning as fast as possible. The factories were pretty much commandeered and anything that the machinery could be used for was viable. Telefunken and Phillips radios, BMW motorcycles, VW Beetles, lots of breweries and glassmakers, just about anything that could be sold to Allied countries for enough money to keep Germany from starving.

When I was a kid I was told that the original "greenhouse" sliding canopy for the Messerschmittcars were leftover from aircraft. Wrong. The same technology was used to make them, but a a Messerschmitt canopy would swallow one of those cars.

The Gunze Sangyo twofer box resides on my shelf. His Lordship's eldest had just finished work experience with a mechanic and had worked on a Messerschmitt show car (shame he never got me photos of it). So I bought the model kit. There is something quite endearing about these old micro-cars.

The Russians were very grumpy about having an island of the West left in Berlin,so they tried to starve them out.
A few people made a lot of money out of the Berlin air lift - notably Freddie Laker who founded Skytrain, the original low cost transatlantic airline.

Vintage 1/24 - I guess you're right. the chassis I just made for the Messerschmitt is almost as small as Micro Scalextric,and very light,even in brass. The 1/24 plastic kit world seems to contain a good selection of micro cars,although they all seem to be out of production now.I was lucky enough to get a Messerschmitt kit off E-bay, but so far I've had no luck with Isettas.I thought that 1/24 micro cars would be ideally suited for racing on 1/32 tracks in much the same way as Midgets are.

Not to mention the fact that these airplane companies had boatloads of parts lying around. What else do you do with a bunch of canopies, when you can't build airplanes? Cars!
