...here's something I just completed on my Jeep Wrangler. I thought it good to show that some folks can still work on their own cars, fix their own houses, etc. I wrote this up at the request of a Jeep forum since several folks have had issues and weren't sure how to proceed...I'm by no means a professional mechanic, I just play one at home.

When it came time to put bumpers on my JKU, I spent a ton of time on the forums looking at various threads and pictures of available bumpers. Thankfully, there is a wealth of information available that others have posted for folks such as myself.

My criteria for the front bumper was that it had to be look good, be full-width, heavy duty, incorporate the factory fog lights, have recovery points, and a mounting spot for a future winch. While I loved the look of the AEV, the price was a little outside of the budget for my build. I discovered the Bestop High Access front bumper and saw that it was available in Matte, a finish that looked close to my stock flares. It had everything on my wish list and was only about $600 including the Tubular Grill Guard.

For the rear bumper, I wanted one that was full-width, had a swing out tire carrier that moved with the tailgate, recovery points, and worked with the stock trailer hitch or had one built-in. Bestop's HighRock 4x4â„¢ Rear Bumper with Tire Carrier fit that bill perfectly.

The part numbers for these items are:
HighRock 4x4â„¢ Rear Bumper with Tire Carrier in Matte Finish: 44934-01
HighRock 4x4â„¢ High Access Front Bumper in Matte Finish: 44918-01
HighRock 4x4â„¢ Tubular Grill Guard: 44915-01

I ordered these from a small local shop, wanting to give them my cash and waited. About 2 weeks later I had front and rear bumpers and the carrier, but the front grill guard was still not in. While the tire carrier was boxed extremely well, the boxes containing the bumpers had both broken out and both bumpers had some chipping – mostly on the D-Ring mounts. Not happy, but figuring I could fix that (Rustoleum Truck Bedliner spray is a good match!) , I proceeded to install the rear bumper first.

Rear Bumper:
Removing the spare tire and installing the bracket for the Heim joint was easy except that the last two bolt holes on the end of the “C” didn't quite allow the bolt to go through and thread into the tailgate. Issue number one now made known, I simply enlarged the holes slightly and everything fell into place perfectly...until I noticed that this bracket didn't look like the one in the manufacturer's pictures or the instructions. Where those show a short “C”, mine was much larger.

Image

Image

Ok, not a big deal, and I figure that will spread the load over the tailgate better.

I removed the 10 pound, joke of a plastic rear bumper, and installed the Bestop unit. Things went smoothly and the bumper looked great. I followed instructions on the carrier bearing and started to install it when I ran into the second issue: the carrier spindle was pressed hard against the factory tailgate hinges!

Image

Image

Looking at the carrier, it was obvious that the carrier was not sitting parallel to the tailgate too – and I'd not even installed the rubber bumpers on it yet!

Image

Back at the computer, I notice the Bestop factory pictures of the JK model show a completely different spindle with a smaller diameter base and cap!

Image

The one that I have is shown on the TJ model in their factory pictures:

Image

Image

After doing more research online and talking to Bestop (who were not too helpful by phone) there may be two or more versions of this carrier being used. They both use the same spindle bearing it would appear, as well as the tailgate mounting “C” bracket.

After thinking about it, I decided to elongate the holes on the side bumper brackets in order to slide the bumper back about 1/4”. This moved the spindle away from the tailgate and straightened the rear carrier properly. Once done, I installed the rubber bumpers on the carrier that contact the bracket. These were easily about 3/4” too long and again pushed the carrier at a crooked angle from the tailgate. Using a hacksaw, I cut them to the appropriate size and then finished them off nicely with a quick hit of a table disk sander. Now, the carrier sat properly! The Heim joint was easy to install and adjust.

The LED light and tire mount went on without a hitch and since I'd done my research, I already knew to reverse the wires on the light. Once done, the bumper is outstanding and fits my needs perfectly. The few installation issues aside, it was pretty easy and gets lots of compliments from other JK owners.

Image

Front Bumper:
The front bumper was simple to install after removing the worthless 20 pound plastic one (see a theme here?). I installed the bumper about a month before the grille guard came in. It fits well and as a full-width looks great. The only complaint I could have is that it doesn't bend back to perfectly meet the flares, but that is a minor gripe.

Image

The original shop I ordered the guard from had two come in that were wrong – one was marked JK in matte finish but was a TJ part and the other came in as a JK with the glossy finish. All of that took 2 months before I had them refund my money. Not their issue, but I wasn't waiting for their distributor to fix the issue for the third time. I ordered the part online and got it in 3 days with the correct part!

The factory fog lights are a simple installation and look good. Once the guard came in, I installed it (you have to remove the bumper to do so) and mounted 2 new Hella Black Magic lights. As I wired it up, I became less enchanted with the way it looked; too much wire wrap and wiring exposed. My wife came into the garage and stated the obvious: “The wires look like crap exposed. Why don't you drill a hole and run them through the guard?”. A genius, this woman is! Off came everything again and out came the drill.

I drilled two small holes under the light mounts and inserted rubber grommets. Using some light string to fish the wires, I ran those into the holes and with the shop vacuum sucked them out the holes in the bottom of the guard I'd drilled for the wiring.

Image

Matching those holes with the bumper, I then drilled the bumper and mounted the guard and finished running the wires.

Image

The wiring was easy and I followed Hella's suggestion and tapped the high-beam wire (White/Green) on the driver's side headlight so I can run them by using the high/low beam switch (note: the rocker switch for the high-beams must be switched on for this to work!) and can rest easy knowing they are off when I shut off the Jeep. I did put the 6” of exposed wires in corrugated wire loom and used small black wire ties to keep them cleaned up and tight.

Image

And the final results:

Image

Was it some work? Yes, but it was well worth it! I love the way it looks, the bumpers are seriously heavy duty, and I'm now in the market for a winch!

The best part though? My wife now likes the way it looks. Happy wife, happy life!

Hi David

I did the same thing to my Jeep right I got it. The plastic bumpers are a waste. I bought my steel bumpers from a Indiana company who uses wind power to run their shop near Lafayette. Can't remember the name off the top of my head but they are sturdy and have not rusted in three years of Indiana winters
(roadsalt) they endured. Did you get the skid plate that goes under the bumper and connects to the frame? If I would have kept the plastic bumpers on they would have ended up in a dumpster in Moab after being knocked off. . . I sold my bumpers, fenders and all the other goodies to a body shop supply company to recoup some of the cost. I painted the area below the bottom body line with bedliner spray paint, I even removed the rock rails and painted under there too.

I have had no luck with items from Best Top either, they just do not look/work the same as it shows in their nice ad's. I had to have lots of work done at the neighborhood upholstery shop to get the duster and the rear window for my bikini top to keep the rain out. Ah the joys of outsourced parts.

Make sure you get something to protect the door sills. I have worn the paint off of mine from my jeans rubbing on it when I enter or exit the vehicle. Do it now before the paint gets too thin.

CRIPES!!!! As overpriced as Jeep products are already, what did this cost!?!? If they reduced the cost of the vehicle to 2/3rds of what they want, I'd be on it like white on rice, but on top of what a Jeep product costs already?

David, are you rich?

Ken - When Bestop was operating in Colorado and making stuff here it was MUCH better. Now that they are made in a far eastern place, just like everything else, their quality has suffered. I have the Mopar sill guards in both of the Wranglers and agree they do a good job protecting things. I'll have to checkout your JK when you get here!

Rob - not rich, just wise with my money. I drove my last 1998 Cherokee I'd gotten used 11 years ago to 190k. I had not purchased a single brand new car since 1993 prior to this one. I do most of my repairs myself too unless something is under warranty. My 2012 JK Unlimited Sport S cost $28.5k. I can find you a 2 door version with a soft top for $24k-ish all day long. Considering my goal is to keep it at least 15+ years, that is pretty cheap. I also get about 22mpg on average, so I'm very happy. I've priced out tons of SUV's by comparison and there is nothing in my book that has the practicality, versatility, or fun-factor of a Wrangler. I've wanted one for about 20 years. The Unlimited with the four doors is perfect for our family.

As for overpriced, I don't think they are, you get alot for what you pay for. My son's Jeep Patriot was $23k and is an amazingly capable 4x4 vehicle with 30MPG for the price. It also can haul quite a bit of junk as he's about to find out moving to OH.

I sold the Cherokee for $5k and budgeted $4k for my build on this Jeep using that money. I was able to save almost $1k from my old Cherokee, so I think I did ok. The bumpers cost half of what most brands charge. My point was mostly to show that guys can and do still work on stuff. As for the lift, I did all the work on that myself as well. I spent almost a year researching Wranglers before buying this one and another year researching the parts I wanted to use. I'm somewhat anal about my vehicles...as if most folks didn't already know that.

Hi David

After going back and doing some research I found the company I got my bumpers from, it is called LoD. http://www.lodoffroad.com/xcart/home.php?cat=3
I have shorty bumpers front and rear without a tire mount on the back bumper. Most of the rear bumper mount tire carriers that I have seen or looked at makes me worry about noise of them flexing while going over bumps. Their is a guy who has a reversed ball hitch adapter holding his spare tire up and a strap to keep it from bouncing on his steel rear bumper with the built in tire rack running around town on 305's. I do not plan on going over 35 inch on tires so a well designed replacement tail gate mount tire carrier will fill the bill just right. That tire carrier mod is a long way down the road after I win the lottery since it is an all connected modification including wheels, tires, .513 gears, ball joints, gussets, axle tube strengthening, stronger axle shafts both front and rear. Luckily for me I have a good friend who runs this shop http://www.getbentkustoms.com/ His stuff is a bit over kill but I can do my own design work to keep the weight down.

It looks like I will be leaving on August second, be at Harry's place on the third and in your drive on the ninth or tenth. I will be meeting up with my son in Tonganxie, Kansas on Monday or Tuesday to see him and his girlfriend. Kris is a part time crew member for the Bounty Hunter/Scarlet Bandit Monster Truck team. It should be a good time meeting up with all of them.

I guess I'm not willing to believe the common acceptance of a car as more than the labor, gross profit, and parts as a sum. To pay $24M for a 2 door Jeep (any year) seems insane to me. In terms of the intrinsic value of the metal, tooling, labor and assembly, it can't be worth more than $6M, even if its made last year. The whole world has accepted what I call insanity, so I suppose it shouldn't be surprising to me when someone I respect pays a lot for something of value. My 1995 Roadmaster cost $3500 in 2002, and gets 28/36mph with an LT-1 Vette engine that isn't destroked. It was only the '95 and '96 Buick Roadmaster that had that engine, I should say. It flies down the road with six people and 600 pounds of tools and luggage in the trunk.

Of course, the only time I need 4WD is when it snows here. That's the only reason I keep looking at the Jeep products and the Toyota FJ. My mother is 82 years old this year, and I am on call always if she gets into trouble. Otherwise, I could fire up the generator and wait out anything. If I could find a 4WD of any kind that is dependable (like my old '77 Bronco), for $3M or so, I'd pay it happily, but computer controlled mystery drive is not acceptable to me for any reason as an emergency vehicle.

Ken - I'd love to visit their place and AEV as well. Always nice to get to meet the guys building the stuff!

Harry - thanks, I'm very pleased how it has turned out. Been a fun vehicle to play with!

Nice one David! Man that looks tough now. I think you can go anywhere with your Jeep now. So are you going to get any sill guards? Are the black flared guards plastic on these Jeeps? Do you know how much extra weight from stock the Jeep is carrying now?

I really like how your jeep turned out. Looks great & I bet will handle off road well.

I thinkk I should probably get some photos up of my 4x4 at some stage.

Dave, when you go visit your son at Wright Patt you could visit those shops, pop up this way and see a couple of us in the bargain. It's roughly a 3 1/2 hour drive from Dayton to Ft Wayne.....I used to do it every weekend before I moved up here in '02. I could do it in my sleep (and sometimes did!).
Your ride is looking good. Wish I had someplace to do work like that on my ride.

Nice DIY project :D
That kind of stuff is fun and rewarding.
Best part of being able to work on your own stuff....that feeling :banana-rock:
When you're all done standing back with a beer in your hand saying to yourself "Yeah".

I never even considered taking pictures of my project....rust repair on my 1992 C1500. New cab corners, fender
and prep a replacement box for paint. The whole thing goes to the body shop for paint today. Gotta pick your battles, I'm going to let the pros paint it so it all matches,I'm no good at blending panels.

Greg - I think we are getting pretty close now. I've got the stock-type Rubicon rock rails on it now. Not sure if I'm going to get anything more than that, but if I do ACE rails are the ones I want as they actually go over the Rubi ones for more side armor. Total new weight was only about 175 pounds total. Hasn't hurt the MPG. The lift knocked me down about 1.5MPG at 75 MPH. We definitely need to see your Patrol!

TsgtRet - If I can swing it, I'd love to get up there to see you guys!

2Fer - I don't envy you. I've done too much body work as a car guy to ever be happy with most of it. Still only an novice welder. Paint I can do, but I hate it, and let's not talk blending. It is the reason I don't paint my car and I don't texture and blend sheetrock in the house - it is an art, and I'm not an artist. I know my limits ;)
