I caved and looked up Tobor. He was originally on Captain Video and his Video Rangers a TV series running from 1949-1954. Then he was in the movie Tobor the Great in 1954. :) I must have seen the movie years later on TV. I knew I heard of him from somewhere, but wasn't sure where. :)

Surely you can't talk B&W SciFi & Robot movies without including Metropolis! The very first and still one of the best. I know when it was originally released in the US it was cut to shreds, but surely the original edit must be available by now.

My favorites are any of the Ray Harryhausen movies.Earth vs Flying Saucers,It came from beneath the Sea,(the Octopus only has six(6) tentacles),20,ooo,ooo miles to Earth. etc.....

Embs, I love Metropolis, I was simply listing movies from that era (50s) that I liked. If you go back older there was the British classic "Transatlantic Tunnel" very well thought out for its and it has a real Tatra in it!

Oh yes! The full length version has been around here for years. Every now and then its actually on TV late at night. The movie comes up in art houses and neighborhood theaters, too.

There was a place in Memphis that used to have summer FritzLangathons and showed the full length movie back to back all night and into the next morning. They had replicas of the female robot (oddly much more buxom than the 1920s actress) on either side of the doors with spooky lights shining straight up from the sidewalk. The 60 year old theater (in 1980 or so), was run by some business school grad students and had beer and wine, too. I loved that place. They also did Rocky Horror all night sometimes, and everybody wore costumes and yelled at the screen because everybody knew all the dialogue. But the best of all was "The Monty", during which every movie Monty Python ever did was shown back to back all night with several of the TV shows mixed in. They had to repeat the show for several nights to satisfy the thousands of people who wanted to see it. The place made a fortune every summer on those things. Its all gone now. So is Memphis, really.

Its good to know that in these days of theaters becoming billboards and ripoff havens, that there are still people around the world who remember when movies were fun, and the moviehouse was a great place to go.

We used to go to the theater every Saturday to see such movies as Teenagers from Outer Space, War of the Worlds, Plan Nine from Outer Space, (so bad it was good) etc.. Just a good time for all of us. Kids don't know what they're missing. :) We always walked there and back home, probably about 2 miles one way. :)

I saw "Forbidden Planet" and "Earth Vs the Flying Saucers" when they were new. Few people remember that Robbie the Robot was a guest star on the "Thin Man" TV series. He was also featured in more than 35 movies, television shows and commercials. Earl Holliman played the cook on "Forbidden Planet".

Forbidden Planet was unusual. Not only Earl Holliman, Anne Francis, Walter Pidgeon, Leslie Nielson, and Robby the Robot, there was also Les Tramayne, the most famous narrator in sci-fi, and a stable in kids shows well into the 2000s, Jack Kelly and James Drury who later became a famous cowboy actors, as well as Harry Harvey Jr., another big westerns actor on TV.

Most sci-fi actors didn't go much further, and lot of them wound up making their fortune in soap operas. Hazel Court, known as the best screamer in sci-fi- a huge big deal in sci-fi, had a long career in very popular TV shows and modern sci-fi. She was one of very few who stayed in movies.

I have always liked sci-fi. I still watch the SyFy channel. Eureka and Warehouse 13 are 2 of my favs. :)

We really liked Eureka. I am a Warehouse 13 fan too.

Fringe. Hmmmmmmmmm...I started it. It sort of lost me near the end of the second season...I still think Walter is classic though. :)

I found it! That British space movie from the 50s I couldn't remember was Satellite in the Sky. One of the great hocum/impossible science drama, black and white movies.

You guys crack me up with this stuff.

Huge Sci-Fi fan. NOT happy with the current SyFy channel fan. WH13 is the only show right now I'm watching weekly. Love it, but notice the writing is going down a bit - although the Noir episode this season was the bomb! Too much reality stuff hitting all the channels.
