That's one way of doing it. I wonder what he was spraying on it? Starting fluid?

Yes, good old Ether.

Sadly I must have done this a 100 times when I was in the service.

I saw this in the shop at the AFB in Germany. Works, but I don't want to do it.

I've done that more than a few times. And each time it's just really cool when it works!!

I can say that, cuz I'm still alive to say it. Trust me, while it's cool, it is dangerous as well.

With my luck, I would blow up more then just the tire if I tried that.

I have used that trick a number of times. Works REALLY well when trying to mount 8 or 10 ply truck tires - or if you have a tire that is a bit narrow for the rim that you are trying to put it on.
It doesn't take a lot of ether to make it work and so long as you don't go overboard, it is a quick easy way to get both beads to seat against the rim so you can get the assembly to hold air. You want to be ready with an air line to fill fairly quickly afterwards though, because if you let the heated air inside the tire cool to much without adding anything, you can end up loosing enough pressure that the bead breaks it's seal and you have to start all over again... (been there done that)
