Wheel suggestion

Until someone does - I'm about to cast a set of Minilites to fit the CB/SCC insert wheels. They are easier to understand the measurements on, Paul's tires are a snap to figure out the sizing on for them, and they are easily available.

However, if they were ever available in a milled wheel, I'd be ready taker!

Because of the shape of the spokes I expect that it would be difficult to do MiniLites by CNC machining alone. Probably they would have to be die cast, then machined as I believe the old Cox wheels were. MiniLites were mostly seen on Trans-Am cars starting in 1969 with a few teams, after that I believe that all of the teams used them. MiniLites were aloso popular for a lot of other SCCA classes. cast and machined wheels would tend to be more expensive. How many would you expect to buy and what would you be willing to pay?

Minilites have 8 spokes, each with compound curves. A high speed CNC milling center would take
about 10 to make the spokes. You will also have time in turning the blanks. So a price of $25 per
wheel would be likely.

There are already inserts aplenty available. Pene Pitlane does white metal ones. BWA does resin. There are also plastic ones available. I guess I'm just wishful thinking. But hey, I figured it couldn't hurt.

Hey, it might be wishful thinking today, but we're not that far from it. It'll happen, it might just take a bit longer. :) Or maybe it'll take a longer bit. *shrug*

I didn't realise the BWA wheels were unobtainable again. Has anyone tried Colin at RSS in the UK?
I thought I had a minilite insert for the Slotit15" rim but no, only a BWA 15" size rim.

Yup. Colin's are good. Haven't tried my BWA inserts in them yet, but the rest measures up as close to identical as makes no difference, so I figure they should fit.

Once they get 3-D metal printing going good we'll see all kinds of neat stuff. They have already made a gun using this process, so it does work, but at what cost? I don't know at this time. :)

I had not seen 3D printing with metals. With plastics 3D printing is very slow because each pass is very thin. If you wanted to make a lot of wheels printing might not be very practical.

I think that these cars had Slot.it rear wheels with turned down Scalextric wheels used as inserts.



This car has the same in back, the fronts are BWA wheels and inserts.

They do look great, that candy red #11 firebird in particular is very tough.
