Austin Mini build 2

Postby VTECFOUR » Mon Nov 04, 2013 1:48 pm

I enjoyed the first build so much that I'm getting right onto another Shotgun Dave body, this time his wide flare one.

Image

Since I'm using my first build's already built chassis and I want it flush with the bottom of the body, the wheel openings will have to be raised. I've removed the existing flares with a Dremel razor wheel blade and will re-position them higher.

Also I'm going to save as much body detail as possible instead of the previous build's smooth look.

Dremel grinded inside the body, radiused the wheel arch openings larger and higher and mocked the body with the loose flares onto my chassis.

I like this re-worked stance better.

Filled in some pinholes and reinforced thin areas from overzealous grinding.

The body sits just a bit lower than my first Mini.

After talking to Paul G. at yesterday's racing night, I'm thinking that the flares can remain as separate pieces and be attached to any stock Mini body just like the add-on wheel flare accessories for 1:1 classic Minis.

Here's another view to give you a better idea of the stance.

Thanks Dave for pumping these bodies out for us to work on.

Built up another Reprotec chassis rather than use the first build's.

Glued the cut off flares back on the body.

This works for me.

Sprayed on some Tamiya TS can paint - Fine Surface Primer, Pure White roof and French Blue body.

I always liked this color combo on a friend's 1:1 classic Mini so I'm happy with the result.

Windows, interior tray and small paint details to go.

The chassis's been tuned so we'll see how it does with the body mounted. My first build is a pesky, little gnat running side-by-side with the larger Trans Ams. Great fun.

Done.

As hoped, it runs just fine. I got a bit aggressive in a corner and took a tumble off the track. I knew I should have epoxied the wheel flares instead of using CA glue. Oh well, it's a runner and not a shelf queen.

Image

That's another Mini down so now we can run three Minis abreast on my track.

On to something different.

Had some intense racing yesterday on Luf's Targa in the sedan/rally class. Came out the worse with the bigger cars. Got shunted off the track onto a concrete floor and rear ended another Mini!

Image

Oh well. Patching it up is easy. Will have to contact ShotgunDave for more bodies.
