I can't remember...

Postby waaytoomuchintothis » Sun Dec 01, 2013 2:33 pm

Now I have a 4 lane track, I'm at least one controller short. I have my old PM controller with all the little knobs to adjust for sensitivity, and two of the fancy electronic ones. All three have adjustable braking, so I have been looking for a controller with adjustable braking that doesn't cost too much. I think I remember someone had an econo controller that had the brake pot and knob. On the other hand, if the ones that don't have adjustable brakes don't present an advantage to people on the other lanes who do have adjustable brakes, maybe that's the way to go.

Anybody got any input here?

At my track I have my Scorpius controller for me, a PM controller with the brake and sensitivity knobs and two basic PM controllers. It doesn't seem to matter who is using what. The better drivers can adapt to their equipment, be it car or controller.

My vote goes for the PM controllers. Though, mine aren't the adjustable kind I've long intended to install some pots to make them so.

Rob, the more consistent the drivers are, the more important it is to have equivalent controllers on all four lanes. Each advantage/disadvantage becomes more critical as driving ability increases.

Then again, if one lane proves to be faster than the others, you can put a controller that's lacking features on that lane.

Well, now I need even more advice. I was digging around in some old stuff and found a 45 Ohm controller that looks complete. How can I know if it is positive polarity? I would like to test it. It would do until I can find a used one like the others, but it has to be positive polarity for this track. Maybe if I take a picture of the guts and email Prof Motor they can identify it?

My first was around $100, the next two were a little over $100. Now they are much more. If I can find a used one like my first (with the little knobs for sensitivity), that would do nicely, and since everybody wants electronic these days, I might find one for $40 or so.

Harry, I'll look it up and see what that is. There really is a big list of these things.

Surprise! That's what my two electronic controllers are. I bought one for me and one for my son, but at $130, I don't think I'll get another.

I agree, that's the one to get as your own. Best one I ever had.

Rob, if it is Parmas they should be positive, but on those it does not matter. They will work.

I'll test the found one tomorrow then. I had a shock tonight (maybe that's the wrong word to use here). One of the controllers with the little knobs has a polarity switch that stays in the down position for positive, and the other one apparently is positive when its up. Is there a way to hook up a controller to determine if its positive or negative polarity?

I am not that smart on all the Pro Motor controllers. If you have your track wired for positive polarity (you should) when you try the controller in negative mode, it should not function, or it functions VERY poorly. Then flip the switch and see if works properly. Now you can mark it. I had this happen, but it was years ago and the controller was modded by the owner.

I would email Professor Motor or call them, and get the right information first of course.

One of the controllers I have has the yellow and green lights, the others just green. Its a good thing I didn't answer this post when it first got here, as it turned out I had a burned out solenoid on the one in question. I replaced it and its good now. What's that yellow light, anyway?

Resistor controllers don't have any preference for track polarity. Electronic ones do! If you use a positive polarity controller on a negative polarity track it'll fzzt.

I couldn't stand the suspense, so I went out and tried the old junker blue 45 ohm controller and it works fine. It has a wire set that is about 14 inches long, so I will need to replace that, but its just fine.
