If you could only have one...

Postby ElSecundo » Wed Dec 11, 2013 10:26 pm

Time for another one of those crazy questions. :)

Before I ask the question, I should clarify -- this isn't a question about "who is your favorite manufacturer?" The question is "If you could only buy cars from one manufacturer, which one would it be?"

For example, your favorite could be NSR, but they may not make enough cars to keep you happy as the sole provider. Your favorite could be Racer, but at 250 a pop, you wouldn't want to be constrained to just buying their cars. Get the picture?

So, starting this thing off, my favorite is LMM, but they don't make enough cars for me. If I could only buy one brand, it would probably be Ninco.

It's kind of a stupid question, but hey, consider the source. :banana-dance:

For me it would be Carrera because of the price and variety. I love the Ninco classics (I have over 50) but with Carrera doing more classics and classic nascar, Can Am and more modern like the new DTMs. I would have to go Carrera. Really a pretty interesting question.... makes you think. Jim

I suspect I would have to answer Carrera, but I wouldn't if Scaley hadn't done some really stupid things lately.

Close between Scaley and Carrera. Scaley for plastic track and Carrera for wood.

I would love to say slot.it but they really don't have enough. I would have to say Scalextric.

I would choose Ninco - they make the variety of cars I want from classic sports cars to JGTC to latest GT and LeMans cars - their cars need tuning but once tuned they are great runners - I find it quite satisfying to take a hopping Ford GT and turn it into a smooth running sleak speed machine

Tough question because my favorite classes of cars are GT and sports cars of the '50s an '60s. But for me it would have to be Slot.It - high performance cars built with quality parts designed to be tinkered with at a reasonable price. Add to this the number and variety of Group C cars (another of my favorite classes), modern GT cars, classics and forthcoming Can Am cars (another favorite class) and the prospects for future viability and I'd say Slot.It is a clear winner.

That said, I also considered Fly classics, Ninco classics and JGTC and Carrera all of whom make some beautiful models that run well with little work. Put a pair of Paul Gage tires on a Fly classic sidewinder and it's one of the most enjoyable rides on my 80' routed track -it was a very close second. And Ninco classics with stock rubber and an NC-1 run great right out of the box - problem is Ninco has gotten too expensive. Carrera's is the most improved, offers a lot of American Muscle and at an attractive price.

But if I could only have one... Slot.It.

I love my Ninco cars & have lots of them.
If we could buy parts & build our own ... that's for me.
But if I have to pick just one ... Carrera!

I have thought and thought about an answer, and it's way harder than what I thought it would be. There are so many good cars out there now. If I had to pick just one and this isn't easy, but they make the smaller cars I like, it would be NSR. They cost a little more but use the best parts and are very smooth runners. :)

Good thought game here. Do the laws of time as we perceive it in this reality come in to play?

My initial answer would be Fly, but only if I could toss on my puffy orange vest and jump in my DeLorean to travel back a few years to when they didn't cut corners on detailing or include flat-out stupid motors. (typed as I'm staring at my TZ2) Fly as it is today, it's just not the same as when they were pumping out 250 GTO's, 906's, sidewinder 917's with a full interior, or even Listers and Venturis.

If you want me to stay grounded in this reality, then I guess I'd have to go with SRC. They carry that old Fly torch nicely in both detailing and in providing a plain and easily tunable chassis. I only wish their catalog were larger, but that will hopefully come in time.

This is actually a harder question than it seems. My favorite cars are T/A so Scaley would seem like the logical choice but its hard to beat Carrera with the price point and variety of cars they make not to mention the detail and how good they run out of the box. I have to go with Carrera on this one!

If I could only pick one brand ... Slot.It

They have all the good stuff underneath (good axles, setscrew wheels and gears, decent motors, adjustable front axle height-etc), make some really cool cars (Group C's in particular, but also GT40, Chapparal and now McLaren) that can be raced together. And throw in their legendary customer service, it's easy for me to pick this brand.
