Stupidest slot car purchase

Yesterday, while at the local commercial slot car store on a whim I decided to buy the Scaley Lotus 49 white kit. But, alas, it is not really a kit as it was fully assembled and firmly glued together as I discovered later. This Lotus only had three or four liveries and I think Scaley has now covered all of them. But it was sold to me for $30 so I figured I could do a fantasy scheme. The only problem is getting it disassembled far enough to mask it for air brushing. I have now discovered that taking apart a factory glued together slot car as fragile as this one is more trouble than it is worth. Maybe I should leave it white and pretend it is a Honda. So, why do manufacturers offer white "kits" fully assembled? Well I have already started this adventure and when it is done I will post images.

Bob, did you happen to see my review of the 49b? It shows how the car looks disassembled, and yes, the construction is odd.

I'm with you, this 'white kit' is as difficult to paint as any fully painted car. Maybe Scalextric misunderstood the term 'ghost car'. :lol:

The 49 is a pain in the butt to reassemble. I've broken the very fragile front end on my Gold Leaf car twice. A third front end sits in waiting - but do I dare? Also can't seem to get the driver planted in his seat now.

Okay, I'll bite. My stupid-est slot car purchase was early on in my experience with Carrera, when I had no idea they did scales other than 1/32. I saw the SWB Ferrari, a favorite of mine for years and years, on a great sale, so I bought it. Imagine my face when I opened a 1/24th car. I still have it.

I paid full beans for a Powerslot Lola T298. That was before I knew what was up with them and the terrible wheels that they came with. But after they were steeply discounted, I thought bought another one. Once the wheels are changed out for good aluminum ones those car are great.Total cost for the second car including wheels was reasonable.

Always wondered why Carrera never did the SWB Ferrari in 1/32 scale.

Bob - I actually thought these weren't too bad to take apart. I re-motored all of mine and have had them pretty torn down.
